Where would Trump go if he accepted electoral defeat?

The Republicans on the SCOTUS are the only ones that matter. And they probably will :frowning: (even the current SCOTUS let alone the one in 2029)

I’d still say there’s a reasonable chance Trump will resign a few days early to be pardoned by President Vance, just so he doesn’t have to risk it.

SCOTUS does not just make rulings on their own, do they? Someone has to bring it, and they have to agree to hear it, as far as I know.

But if a democratic-appointed federal prosecutor decides to prosecute him after he pardons himself, it would get elevated to them sharpish. They are the ones who would ultimately decide if you can pardon yourself or not.

I mean I’ve said multiple times the cold hand of grim reaper is more likely to settle this matter than any of the things discussed in this thread.

But still if the Democrats win, he pardons himself, and he’s still alive at the end of 2029 it’s likely to have reached the SCOTUS. I don’t think he’d take the risk they’d find against him. I’d say there is a good chance he’ll resign just before his term finishes so he can be pardoned by someone other than himself

An bcd

Then I’m sure it won’t happen then. As nothing has happened in US politics in the last 10 year that most people believed would never be allowed to happen

Why would he go anywhere ? It’s not like he would ever go to prison. Even before that immunity decision, he still wouldn’t have gone to an actual prison. Worse case scenario is house arrest - and would he even care about that? He doesn’t really travel much, except to his own properties.

Russia is not a stable country. I’m not sure what their regime will be like in 2029. Remember the 2023 Wagner Group March on Moscow (Wikipedia link)?

Trump’s best place to go is, as others have mentioned, Florida.

I’m sure they’ll still take care of their defected assets, just like they did after the Soviet Union collapsed.

People are really going to miss Rush Limbaugh.

I recall news stories saying that they lost privileges and sunk into poverty.

I don’t think the U.S. pushed to get any of them extradited to stand trial here. If they had been part of a prisoner exchange, that would have been unfair.

Each of them is a slightly different story, as Trump would be. Trump would be unlikely to have the poverty problem. But his greater prominence would increase the risk of the new Russian government wanting him out.

If the sum total of the punishment he receives is a night in the holding cell, the prosecutor who made it happen would have his political career made.

Not that it’s particularly likely to happen. But it won’t be because no one wants to.

The top reason is he will probably be either dead or not fit to stand trial in 2029. The next is he will almost certainly have a pardon either from himself or from president-for-the-week Vance.

No they kept their status. They tended to all be bitter alcoholics in a crappy apartment, so it was not the most expensive or difficult thing for government to maintain.

Here’s the sort of article I recall – this one is from the New Republic:

Moscow Is No Place for a Defector

Besides the alcoholism, they tended to die young (Edward Lee Howard fell to his death at age 50; Glenn Souther shot himself at 32). Admittedly, neither fate is plausible for Donald Trump. But once in Russia, he loses much of the ability to influence his fate. He cannot be sure they would let him in a good hospital when sick, even if the Putin regime still exists.

Going to any dictatorship has similar disadvantages.

All of which beats the inside of supermax. Not that such a fate is that likely, but that’s not the premise of the OP.

If the end of January 2029 rolls around and Trump is alive (and healthy enough to stand trial, and live to see sentencing), under a democratic administration, and not pardoned. Then he’s almost certainly getting charged federally, and standing trial.

A nice dacha in Russia (or mansion in Dubai) might seem a better bet for him at that point.

This was a visual I really did NOT need at the end of this irritating Monday…

Why would he go anywhere but mar a largo?
