I stand to inherit about that amount per annum. Unlike you, I plan to drink it away while wallowing in guilt imposed by a work-crazed society. It’s the least I can do to make up for my lazyass life to waste what’s left.
The rat race is all there is left that has meaning in this society. At least giving your life over to it means you are a good person who cares about others in the only way that’s left to you. If you cop out, as I have, you really don’t have much at all to recommend you.
The saddest part (I don’t know if you are being satirical or not) is that you are pretty much right. We are a society that really doesn’t value anything more than financially compensated industry.
Even devotion to things like charity can be seen (IMO) as a diversion due to a lack of financially motivated industry rather than a laudable goal in and of themselves.
Devotion to things like self improvement would probably be written off as narcissism.
