Telcontar is a nod to Master Tolkien. Telcontar being the name of Aragorns house once he reclaimed the throne of Gondor. It is 'Strider" in the language of Westernese.
Storm is a cat spirit in the short story collection I write. She is named for two purposes. A story in Welsh mythology conserning a king who has children by a lover and his pissy Queen(Sin). as well as my AbFave Fleetwood Mac song.
The combo was chosen to be a coven name and bestowed not a month before the coven broke up, do I figured give it a second life on the net. I also use it at Yahoo, so if you find yourself there, and see me don’t hesitate so say howdy!
I was desperately casting about for something clever enough to impress all the staggering intellects on the SDMB, and I feared that my handle would lack a certain…
I’m just not very creative when it comes to on-line names, so I went for a parody of either Van Gogh’s bio, or the Iggy/Bowie song Lust For Life. It shows how I feel about my existance.
I am a Grateful Dead fan. The “Jerry” is for Garcia (who else?) and the “bear” is for the cute multi-colored dancing bears that are so plentiful in the Deadhead scene.
Approximately every three months this topic rises from the ashes like a Phoenix. Since this thread has been bumped, I thought I’d post this information.
There have been a number of threads dedicated to the topic of the meaning or origin of the Usernames selected by the Teeming Millions[sup]TM[/sup]… as follows…
I was in training for a tech job at the time. I made a sarcastic comment to one of the guys in the training class and he called me a jackass. The instructor, a very religious fellow, made a big deal about it. So I chose Jackass as my IM handle. The instructor made a REALLY big deal about that and wouldn’t accept my explanation that a jackass is a male donkey, so I changed the spelling. So it was my IM handle at the time I registered and I figured that it would be easy to remember.
I wanted to find a name I could use on every site i.e. with little chance of its already being taken. So I chose a non-English word I could remember - a type of wine I like.
So wherever you go on the 'net, if you come across amarone, it’s probably me.
Mine is rather, well, uncreative. It is an amalgamtion of different things, such as the first to letters of my last name, and the last four letters of the car i drive. No vowels. Vowels are the devil.
Mine’s from the George Kennedy character in “Cool Hand Luke” - a great movie that all you under 30’s need to see - lots of catch phrases that you hear from time to time.
The only drawback is that sometimes people get the wrong idea when I comment on some gaay related post…
I haven’t read all of the preceding pages yet, but I bet I’m the only one here who has named themselves after grafitti.
Yep. On my way home one day I saw this (spray)painting of a guy with wavy legs holding onto a streetlamp and “My Darn Snake Legs” was written next to it. I laughed so hard that I had to stop the car. For about a month it made me happy everytime I drove that piece of road. Then they painted over it…ruined my week.
I wanted to use Cyrano, but apparently there is another Cyrano already out there. I’ve never seen this Cyrano, so I guess he/she was a one timer (it actually could be me. I lurked for a long time before finally making some kind of commitment to join the SDMB, and I’ve had a couple of one time posts under various names). Anyway I had to think up something quickly. Shah Jehan built the Taj Mahal. I’ve been told that the name translates to English as “King of the World”. I didn’t choose this name out of arrogance or any obsession with the movie Titanic. I just always liked the way the name sounds and it often justs pops into my head out of nowhere.
Just a combination of initials and abbreviations that served as my first user name on MSN many moons ago, is easy for me to remember and apparently original. It’s also irritatingly non-pronouncable.
