I’m thinking about going back to work so I was filling out an online job application. One of the questions was why I left my last job. And my options were
*Voluntarily quit
*Terminated
*Laid off
How about “none of the above”? I worked there for twenty-seven years and then I retired. I picked “voluntarily quit” as being the closest.
There was also a question about my age group. The possibilities were
*Under 16
*16-21
*21-30
*31-39
*Other
I’m forty eight so I’m an “other”.
Now I’m not applying for a job delivering pizzas. This is a Borders and I see people working there who are my age and older.
My phone is dying…it randomly freezes, and often will not complete a call. When I do get a call to go through, the connection is very distorted, even when I have a strong signal. I’ve never had a mobile device wear out this fast – I’ve only had it a few years!
(It’s an HTC running Windows Mobile, if you’re wondering. I don’t plan to purchase either one again.)
Stupid of them to ask, then. If it’s not a hiring criterion, they shouldn’t even give you the opportunity to point to it as a reason you weren’t hired.
They can, IIRC, include a survey questionnaire that is not used in hiring and is not checked by the managers. The questionnaire is used for statistical reports to determine such things as how diverse the employee population is.
This sounds like it was asked as part of the hiring process, though. Even if the data gets routed separate places, (a) putting it on the same form looks really bad, and (b) asking prospects instead of people you’ve given a job offer is still pretty damned shady.
Fuck you, Old Navy. And fuck you, too, Eddie Bauer.
I am a short curvy gal. For years you guys have been the only place I could buy jeans that fit and that I could afford.
Now, for some godforsaken reason, all Old Navy “short” jeans are *four inches longer *than they used to be. Ok, I get it. I’m supposed to wear your jeans with heels. But four inch heels???
And, YOU, senor Bauer. Fuck you and your anti-petite discrimination! You can only get petite jeans online. NO store carries petite in the store. Long? Sure, we carry long! Petite? Uh, no. for that you have to pay shipping! Thanks for flying Eddie Bauer!
Jeans are getting longer? Yay! The only good thing about wearing fat lady clothes was that the legs were finally long enough for me - getting back into regular-sized clothes, the legs are getting too short again.
Asking prospects is done frequently, at least in the job market (medicine) that I’m in. It helps with anti-discrimination issues - for instance, if you can show that few of one race or many of another apply, then hiring a low overall percentage of one or high of another is common. Usually when I’ve seen the online applications this kind of question is on the last “page”; you submit all the other data and then the “oh hai, please fill out demographics, thx” page comes up.
Welcome to my life, but with clothes for tall women. Old Navy/Gap/Banana Republic have an amazing selection of clothing–INCLUDING TOPS–filed under “Tall,” but they *only *carry it online (they occasionally have Long pants in the stores, but they usually aren’t quite long enough). The only place I’ve been able to find pants with 35" and 37" inseams is Alloy’s website.
I see Petite shit everywhere, however. Hell, in most stores, you get your own fucking section. I have *never *seen a Tall section for women in a clothing store. Women can be short, or we can be fat, but we can’t be over 5’8".
