Prejudice is indeed something that I consider negative, especially when applied to entire groups of people. Like I said before, I wasn’t defending or justifying anything the_diego was saying. I suppose I interpreted her post differently, something more of a confession that black actors simply didn’t do anything for her, as opposed to saying that an actor is black, ipso facto she finds them unattractive. She did allow for the possibility of Sidney Poitier being someone she might be attracted to, after all. I took it to be an admission of a strong preference that had embarrassing implications. I may have been mistaken.

I’ve gotta say, though, the more I think about it, the more I realize that I was making the same error that I think you’re making now, treating “race” as anything more than social construct that allows us to put a lazy label on people. My bad.

Would you please like to explain how I’m treating race as anything more than social construct. Because that’s a point of view I’d certainly love to hear. Also, please point where I individualized people by race…. other than their humanity.

Anyway…

Most Hollywood performers are “sexy” or “attractive” because people are told that they are supposed to be. The majority are average looking people whose frequent appearances make them seem to BE attractive. Having seen several of them in person on the street in New York or at conventions, I often wonder why this person is viewed as being “sexy.”

Benedict Cumberbatch and Jennifer Garner. I’m not a big fan of bony faces.

Ditto on JG, and for that reason. Almost looks like a man.

On the male side, I never understood why women found Brad Pitt to be attractive. But what would I know?

I dont find Grandpa Pitt attractive anymore. His appeal used to be his boyishness. Ditto for Redford - he’s fugly now and has endured too many sunburns.

Courtney Cox isnt even attractive to me. Too bony and stark, in spite of the many cosmetic procedures she apparently has undergone (and is spokesperson for). Not a good endorsement imho.

Throw me in with nevadaexile as well. Jennifer Lawrence isn’t unattractive but she’s someone that, were she not famous, the typical guy would pass without a second look - in fact, she’s young enough that such experiences were likely pretty recent. It’s basically an exposure effect - put someone in front of enough people and you hit some sort of attractiveness critical mass.

I think the whole point of Jennifer Lawrence is that she’s not a typical unapproachable super hot model/actress, but rather a cute personable girl next door. She is very attractive, and She can be very sexy when she wants to be, But her main appeal isn’t super sexiness, but being cute with a great personality and sense of humor. She seems like the bartender who will talk to everybody and if you’re cool and not creepy and pushy will come and have a beer with you when her shift is over. Also it doesn’t hurt that she is incredibly talented, and generally makes smart choices in her movies (Though she was horribly miscast as Mystique in X-men: First Class.) I’ve followed her since Winter’s Bone, where she just disappeared into her role, and she’s rarely disappointed. There are very few people, male or female, who can get me interested in a movie simply because they are appearing in it, but she is one of them.

ETA: If the women in your town all look like Jennifer Lawrence, let me know where that town is and I will pencil it in for my next vacation.
