I’m not a fan of the “modern” version. It seems to be a backwards move to move to the way they tried to make superhero costumes work in previous years. It erases any connection to the WWII soldier aspect which is what makes this character unique. It’s a more faithful interpretation of the comic book costume, true; but without the license illustrators take take with proportion and shading, it falls flat.
I like how they adapted the comic book design into a plausible military uniform, if a little contrived. And I loved the WWII set film, and wixh more could’ve been made in that era.
But I don’t really have any particular affinity for either design.
Note: I do not read superhero comics, nor am I American (not sure that matters).
The Avengers one seems a bit too ‘comic-booky’ for me. I think Cap is one of those heroes that a direct translation from the page to the screen just won’t work for his costume, and I feel that the Avengers costume is trying to do that.
The Other Waldo Pepper: Thanks, but that one doesn’t work for me either. I think it’s something about the site itself and not the individual link that my computer doesn’t like.
GuanoLad: Thanks. That one works just fine for me.
I like what they did with the World War II one and agree that the boots are kind of strange on the modern suit, but I really do like both of them. Each of them does a good job of fitting into the setting for which it was intended.
If I had to pick, I’d say I like the WWII one slightly better, but only slightly and mostly for the novelty of it (looking quite different from how Captain America is usually portrayed, while still being recognizable.)
I think it totally appropriate that Captain America updates his suit to fit the era in which he currently lives. Material and design improvements over time lead to better results for him.
The WWII version looks intriguing for a period costume, but would look out of place in the 21st century. I have no complaints with the new suit.
But I’m not a comic book officianado, so I’m not tied to a preconceived notion.
One thing is that he MUST have a circular shield so he can throw the dang thing.
The whole frisbee concept was very cool to kids back then and their grown-up versions now expect it.
Especially since it was made of some magical Marvel metal ‘vibranium?’ that causes it to boomerang.
Much as Mjölnir does when thrown by Thor.
Man, I loved the heck out of that movie when I was a kid (dude had a glider that came out of the back of his motorcycle!) and boy is it lame to watch now. The one in the 1990 movie looks OK, but the fake ears are way too obvious. Plus the less said about that movie the better.
I voted for the WWII suit. The newer one is decent enough, but I like the boots better on the WWII togs. Here are some more pics of the new one. I think it will look fine for the movie, but a couple of those shots make him look like he’s got a turtle head. I also think that throwback look he had in the movie with the leather coat and the shield-shaped shield looked nice too.
In WWII, he was just one soldier among many, and therefore wore a costume that made him look like a soldier. A special soldier, maybe, but very much a sort of “first among equals”.
Now, he’s being recognized as one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes[sup]TM[/sup]. He’s not just one of the boys Over There any more, and so it’s appropriate that his costume no longer reflects that.
Judged on their individual merits, I like the period costume a little more, but it definitely had to change, and the new one isn’t bad. Both of them look practical, while still retaining the distinctive character design.
The WWII costume looked good in context. I don’t think it would fit the modern day setting. My main problem with the new costume is that it’s a random snap taken on set. It will probably look a lot different with the final lighting and cameras.
Wasn’t Kirk’s original shirt green, but appeared gold on recordings?
