Which Gamecube Mario Party is the best?

My wife and I have been enjoying Lego Star Wars(both games), which are really the first co-op games we’ve played.

Having played these, I have been thinking about the Cube’s Mario Party titles. It’s just my wife and I, but they look like fun to play. I know I’ve played them some before and enjoyed them, but I’m wondering which is the best.

Which is the best and why?

It’s Mario Party 4-7, in case you are wondering.

Thanks!

Well, I don’t usually do this…but just this once!

If you like co-op play, let me recommend Mario Kart : Double Dash, which features a driver/gunner mechanic that’s incredibly fun. My wife and I had a blast playing the game. The four difficulty levels combined with the four-race cups and the sixteen-race Grand Prix make for lots of replay value.

Well, my ex-gf (sorta ex-ish, long story fit for MPSIMS at a later date) was a huuuuuge fan of Mario Party, so I’ve had experience with 5, 6, and 7. I never played 4 but she had. Her favorites are definitely 6 and 7 out of the group. I would have to agree with her, I think I slightly preferred 7 over 6 though. Both have a good variety in terms of the maps so you’re not just playing the same board with a different look. That’s what my problem with 5 was, there was no variety in the actual board.

If you have a Wii, though, I highly suggest NOT purchasing Mario Party 8 and waiting for the next iteration. I bought it and I kind of regret it now. It had one or two good maps and most of the minigames are fun, but I don’t like how they decided to make the items work.

Anyway, hope that helps.

IMO Mario Party 4 is the best. Just the best minigames. If I remember correctly the later MP games for the cube had a lot of chance based mini games, which I did not like.

Interesting. I have no problem with the items in that game, but what pisses me off is that you can’t skip the cutscenes or speed up the animated actions. As fun as it is to watch my character jump and punch the dice, and them add up, and my character walk, and the board be animated, and then the next character, each with a tiny delay, I’d much rather just play the minigames and ignore the cutesy animations.

I liked 7 a lot, but I much prefer 6. The day/night shift was brilliant. I didn’t play the older ones enough to form much of an opinion except I found the boards in 4 very frustrating.

Agreed. MP4 was the best, for basically this reason - the later you go in the series, the less correlation there is between “I did something well” and “I got a reward of some sort”. It’s still very possible for the underdog to win the overall game in MP4 - star stealing, random locations, etc. keep a very reasonable amount of chance in the game - but there is at least SOME performance based aspect involved in the mini-games.

YMMV, particularly since a huge part of the Mario Party crowd is (no offense intended) the kind of people who often would prefer the more chance-based setup.
