Which Gift Would You Choose?

That’s true, but the particular knives on offer don’t look particularly fantastic. I’m very much not a fan of the “giant knife block” approach to cutlery; it’s like trying to do delicate carpentry with a shotgun. I get individual knives, one at a time, based on need and quality, blade by blade. For example, last week, I went out to the restaurant supply store and got myself this. That, now, is a hell of a knife. I don’t think I’d be comfortable with the knives on the gift link.

Which is, interestingly, consistent with a couple of other responses in the thread. The bicycle guy says the specific bike on the link isn’t great. The video geek wants more details on the camcorder before he can get interested. And me, the food-gear snob, I shy away from the cooking accessories. Maybe we’re just spoiled. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ha! You hit my initial thought right on the head. What I really want is a Wii, so I wondered if I could sell whatever I got to cover the cost.

Ok, decision has been made, and the order was placed yesterday. First off, once you get past the first two pages, there is zero I’m interested in (except for the GPS, but it’s listed as “Used for hiking only”, and I want an in-car one). So, anything I get is going to from early on in the list.

There are plenty of things I’d be tempted by if I didn’t already have one – bike, digicam, grill, golf clubs, drill, AC unit, stereo and toaster oven would all be “maybes”.

Kitchen items: We’re pretty well set on cookware, knives, and such. The griddler looks nice, but since I’m the one who does the dishes, I don’t want yet another hard-to-clean kitchen contraption.

Telescope: Love to have one, and I’d probably never actually go out and buy one. However, as was mentioned, I’d probably only use it for a short time and then it’d be a coat rack. Besides, the light pollution around here sucks.

Luggage: Strong contender – we have enough for our weekend jaunts to the in-laws, but anything beyond that and we have to borrow from family. However, decent luggage isn’t expensive, and we would only use it once or twice a year. Pass.

Beverage cooler: Oooo…I wouldn’t have to walk down to the fridge to grab another Pepsi One…I could keep this sucker right under my desk! I could become even lazier! Errr…better not.

Portable DVD Player: Nearly got this. It’d be nice to be able to strap it to the car seat so The Littlest Briston could be occupied during those long ride to grandma and grandpa’s. However, we’re going to be looking at getting a mini-van or small SUV in the next year or so, and expect it would come with a DVD player built-in. Pass.

Keyboard: Almost got this as well – not for me, but for The Littlest Briston. Before she was even two, she showed an aptitude for piano. A family friend – a piano teacher – was very impressed and was excited to start giving her lessons once she turned three. Unfortunately, she passed away last year. Still, I have every intention of getting TLB those lessons. I just don’t want to get this keyboard if I’m going to be buying an actual piano a short time down the road.

Which brings us to: The Vivitar Digital Camcorder. We bought a camcorder shortly before TLB was born, and I quickly decided I hated it. No means for digital transfers, poor picture quality. So, hell with it…a High-Def camcorder it is. Should be here in a couple of days, and my web site will probably have an annoying amount of video clips shortly thereafter.

Bingo – I was frustrated by the lack of info on the site, so yesterday I called and asked for specifcations on the camcorder and DVD player. The camcorder is indeed the DVR565HD.

Congrats on the anniversary. I somehow managed to miss the deadline for getting my 10year gift :smack: I was pleasantly surprised when I was able to get 2 gifts at my 15th. WooHoo. I got a camcorder similar to what you got and the wife got the 8-piece Calphalon non-stick cookware. I figured she hears so much about the crap I put up with at work she deserved an anniversary present as well.

Congrats!

I’d go for the Calphalon! (It’s worth about $150, btw)

My overwhelming first instinct was the bike-- neither of us have one, and it’s something I’d very much like to have next summer.

But then–I’m a sucker for gemstones. The sapphire and diamond pendant (the circle one) would match my wedding ring, which is sapphire and diamond as well.

I really don’t know which one I would chose. I’d have to think about it.

y’all have a much nicer selection than we did.

I’ll take the camera. If I don’t like it, I can always give it to a niece or nephew as a Xmas present.
