Subway: cheap bread piled high with shredded iceberg lettuce. And maybe some mayo if they’re feeling generous. There’s no actual food in the sandwich, since that would cost money.
Never again for me.
JJs is better, but that ain’t sayin’ much. I agree with the folks above who say their marketing “we got attitude” routine is lame. Their website is also annoying and won’t give you a map. But it appears they are in most US states.
These guys http://www.mrgoodcents.com/locations.cfm make a real sandwich with real ingredients in real quantities. If you live where they are, give 'em a try. And no, I have no connection with them. It was just such a relief to find a decent sandwich joint.
The BEST deli around here is easily Zingerman’s, which is the sort of place you’d see on the Food Network. It’s an excellent place to go if you want to spent eight million dollars on a sandwich. It’ll be an amazing sandwich, but seriously, look at those prices.
Oh, man, Zingerman’s. drool Any trip to Ann Arbor requires a pit stop there. edit: Holy crap. I remember them being $8-10 expensive, but not $10-$15 expensive. Well, good on them that they can charge those prices and people are still coming.
It appears from the website linked upthread that there is a total of 1 Jimmy Johns in my state (the most populous state in the Union, I should add). It is in the godforsaken hellhole of Clovis. Guess I gotta go with Quizno’s.
True story: Zingerman’s is across the street from a small specialty grocery store, Sparrow Market. Sparrow Market sells Zingerman’s bread for two dollars less than they do at Zingerman’s itself. They are ACROSS THE STREET from one another, and still people line up outside Zingerman’s and buy their six dollar bread.
Hell, people may call me a sucker for spending $4 on bread, but Zingerman’s sourdough is fantastic. And I’m from San Francisco, I get cranky if I don’t get my sourdough fix. (Finding good sourdough in the Midwest is something of a challenge.)
I’d never heard of them, and they don’t sound particularly appealing from the descriptions here and in the pit thread. And I sure as heck ain’t driving to the garden spot known as Clovis just to try it.
I hate Subway’s bread – it’s like eating cotton. The ingredients are o.k. Never been to a Jersey Mike’s, but just last week my sister said to try them and make sure to order “Mike Style.” I used to eat at Quizno’s on a semi-regular basis, but haven’t been in more than 5 years. I’d say they were just o.k. I like the toasty bread.
I ate at a Schlotzky’s probably 15 years ago. Not bad, but not memorable enough for me to go back since then. Literally, I can’t remember anything about what I ate there.
I like Panera’s a lot, and there’s a variety of other things to eat – the soups are quite good and the salads decent.
I avoid chains whenever possible, though. There was a place in San Gabriel (still there I think-- oops, they’re in Alhambra – yep, they’re still there) called the Belly Buster, and they had awesome sandwiches and a great selection of beers.
If I can find one, though, my all time favorite is a banh mi sandwich. Perfection!
I don’t get the love for Potbelly. There’s a couple of them here, and I’ve had them a few times. Doesn’t matter what you order, because they’re basically all bread with no filling (even if you order them with the “thinner bread” option, whose existence means they know about the problem).
Cousin’s Subs. Mainly in Wisconsin with four in Arizona. Their tagline is “Better bread. Better subs.” and the bread really is better. It’s a little bit crusty but not so crusty that you can cut your gums on it.
I do not patronize Jimmy John’s. Any fast food joint that makes its employees sign noncompetition contracts as a condition of their employment doesn’t get my business.
That being said, I’m fond of Which Wich and Schlotzky’s. And what’s wrong with Subway? From this thread, you’d think they were all fetid pits of horror.
Subway is decent. They’re not too expensive, and the degree to which you can customize your sandwich really means that whether or not it’s a good sandwich is ultimately up to you.
Jimmy John’s is decent, but as I’ve mentioned before, we have a local sandwich chain here in Olympia that does everything they do but better.
Quizno’s, I haven’t been to in years - they’re overpriced, and they don’t even GOT A PEPPAH BAH anymore. They were pretty good about 10-15 years ago, though.
Local place called Feastworks, right in my neighborhood. It replace a Subway that failed. Sausages and cured meats made right on the premises by the owner. Fucking awesome.
I know this is a necro, but whatever. Quality-wise, I enjoy them about the same.
On the one hand, Subway is cheaper.
On the other hand, in the time it takes me to put on pants, drive to the Subway that is less than a mile away, stand in line, order, and get my food, Jimmy John’s has already delivered my sandwich to me.
They may be the only company in existence whose motto is 100% legit. They are, indeed, freaky fast.
Subway and Quiznos are both pretty bad-they use low quality cold cuts. Local shops often advertise that they use good brands-the difference is enormous.
