I’ve seen a few leaked episodes over the summer. Of course, since I saw them back in June, things might be heavily re-done by air-time. Anyway, my take on them:
Fringe.
The pilot is pretty awesome, though not as exciting as the very first time I saw Lost. It’s J.J. Abrams, though and I’m sure the momentum will carry it at least over Christmas. I’m not sure about a full season though, since the premise might get stale quickly.
Raising the Bar.
I love courtroom soaps and dramas. This is a bit heavy on the soap. With **Shark **gone, I’ll keep watching, but will not weep once it gets pulled. Gone by Thanksgiving.
The Mentalist
Is actors Australia’s biggest export these days? Anyway, this is **Psych **with angst. I liked it but it won’t be around for Thanksgiving. Or even a month from now.
True Blood
OK, it’s Allan Ball. But it’s still yet another vampire show, and the vamps look cheesy. Throw a mindreader in the mix and I don’t really know how this will turn out. The pre–air I saw lacked some stuff with fx and such. I love me a good vampire show, but this is just… well another one, with no real interesting premise apart from expletives and **Anna Paquin **whose allure eludes me.
Pretty Handsome
Transvestites. Yawn.
This one trick pony is only in it for the shock and saying “[Keanu]Whoa dudes…Look how edgy we are!”[/Keanu] Or maybe it’s just my Euro perspective.
Of course shows on premium cable channels won’t be yanked off the air, but they can still fail. Also, What other new shows are there? Which will survive?
Fringe looks awesome. I can’t wait to watch the premiere. Plus, I had a very similar idea for a short story once and while it didn’t pan out (it’s probably 3/4 finished on my hard drive somewhere) I want to see what someone else does with the idea.
And I agree with you on The Mentalist, if that lasts more than a few episodes I would be shocked. Of course, I’m pretty shocked Swingtown has lasted as long as it has, so I may not be the best predictor of TV shows.
I don’t really have an opinion on much else. Worst Week looks amusing (kind of like a reverse How I Met Your Mother) and while I don’t plan to watch it, 90210 will either burn out in a few weeks or run for years. There is no other option for a show like that.
I’m glad I saw this, as I’m going to be out of town when Fringe premiers and I need to set my DVR to record it. I spend some time Saturday checking for the premier dates of new and returning shows to make sure I didn’t miss any, and somehow this slipped under my radar (and I know I checked Fox’s website, because I’ve got a note to record Terminator on Monday).
I think the only new shows we’re planning to watch are 90210, True Blood, and Fringe. I don’t really have high hopes for any of them, though I would be tickled if 90210 somehow manages to be entertaining.
There are a number of new shows I want to check out, although I have mixed feelings about how well some of them will do. The Mentalist is one, along with 11th Hour, My Own Worst Enemy, and Crusoe, but it’s mainly because they have interesting concepts and I want to see what they do with them.
True Blood is another one I want to see, although that me be difficult because I don’t have HBO and I’m not sure it’s worth paying a higher cable bill for.
