Which one of you straight dopers makes the MOST money per year?

I’m an actuary and my current annual salary is AUD$143,611

No offense or anything (and I’d be quite happy with six figures) but does $100k a year make you rich anywhere?

I work part-time to cover what scholarships and parents don’t. Last year, I worked security and behind the bar at a well-known local club, and pulled down something like $400 a week for three five-hour shifts.

Now I sell sunglasses part-time (less money, but I enjoy the job more, and I’m less likely to have issues if the IRS comes to call) and I’ll probably pull down $20k this year.

ahem

Well, I don’t want to shame anyone, so let’s just say that last year, my income was up into the five-figure range.

According to the Census Bureau, if your household makes $100,000 or more, that puts you in the top 12.3% of the population. So, yes, there are a lot of places where $100k a year make you rich.

Myself, I’m a full-time student right now, my work primarily consists of freelance computer programming or computer troubleshooting for anyone who needs it in the area, when I have the time. Last year, I made slightly under $8,000.

Damn, I know I’d feel as rich as Trump if I made 100,000 a year.

I made, on paper, about $250K the year I lived in Bangkok. It was really, once all the accounting tomfoolery that was done by the company paying me, closer to about $100-150k (figures in USD). That almost certainly put me in the top 1-2% of income for that country. Certainly rich by the common person’s definition, although not wealthy (See Chris Rock’s HBO special for that definition). And with the income disparities one sees there it almost makes you feel guilty.

I’ll make a LOT less this year. I know for certain that there are Dopers who make a lot more. By and large they truly earn their money, doing difficult work that requires a lot of skill and talent, and often lots of stress and tough hours.

And no, I don’t have any money you can borrow, invest, steal, etc. But thanks for asking.

Just in salary right now not so much because I took a big cut to make a lifestyle change. Though the cost of living also dropped when I moved so I actually feel like I’m making more.

But…outside of salary…

I also get 3% of all company income and I run my own firm on the side that’s on par for another 60-80K this year.

Nyeh. I do a lot…I get a lot.

I really don’t understand why people are so weird about talking about money and how much they earn…

I’m a student, and don’t work during term time, so I make pretty much negligible amounts. Maybe $4000 during the year in total if I work during all my breaks. Then I take about $10,000 in student loans/year as well. (These figures are all very rough seeing as I get my money in Swedish Kroner, and I have used very rough exchange rates for SEK–>USD)

No, it doesn’t. People always confuse income with wealth. One you need to survive. The other one you build with what’s left over. (Excepty when you marry rich or inherit the dough. Did not happen and will not happen to me, respectively)

Moving.com has a nice cost of living comparison. For kicks, I looked up two places I actually lived in.

Cost of living index (100=national average):
New York,NY : 413 :frowning:
Greenboro, NC: 66

Right there you see that you need a lot more income in New York than in Greensboro just to survive. Apart from taxes, the most striking difference is always housing:
Average cost of a 2,000 square foot home:
New York, NY: $1million;
Greensboro:$170k

Granted, I took some extreme examples here. But take Chicago - by no means a small town, right? Cost of living index:96; 2,000 square foot home: $260k
So, no, $100k does not make you rich anywhere. It should provide comfortable living, and even in New York you don’t have to worry about where the food for the next day comes from. But in Greensboro, you would be able to save a sizeable amount from that income, whereas in New York you pay much more to the taxman, the grocer (who needs to pay his mortgage as well), and your own mortgage, and probable won’t be able to save a lot for retirement

Dorfl

I’m a student. Working part time leads me to about $4K a year, to cover what parents don’t.

A certain ex-mod here is said to manage $600M worth of funds. I’m sure that entails a good salary.

Last year I made over 68,624,857,304.36…

In Turkish Lira…

Whoever it is, it ain’t me.

My job title? Assistant professor. We mostly don’t make much, unless you’re a prof in a College of Business, where the salaries are obscene. (Profs there have a third of the teaching load, the same expectation for publication, and have salaries 3-4 times higher than mine. Go figure.)

It sure doesn’t make you rich in L.A., though it definitely doesn’t make you poor either. I’ll volunteer a vague answer and say that our household income is right around the 100K mark, but I won’t say who brings in what.

The OP actually wanted to know who made the most money. A lot of people (me included) aren’t going to answer if only because there’s no way they would be amongst the people making the most money.

Whomever up there quoted monstermoving.com is dead right, too.

I went from a rating of 120 (Northern Virginia) to a rating of 66 (rural Ohio) and I’m living large, man. Even with the drop in pay.

Because this is a message board and I don’t personally know ANY of the members and for five dollars you can become a member and have access to other members’ email addresses? With all of the scammers and e-marketers out there, I wouldn’t want to be targeted because I was stupid enough to reveal that I made a lot of money (I don’t).

Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

No offense or anything (and I’d be quite happy with six figures) but does $100k a year make you rich anywhere?

Well, there’s “rich” and then there’s RICH.

RICH is Donald Trump, the Carnegies, etc.

Then there’s “rich” which, to me, means that all of your needs are met, you can afford to save for retirement, you have a decent house, a car that runs and you can afford to feed your kids … and maybe take a nice vacation every now and then.

Could I be “rich” in WV on 100k a year? Sheeyet. I could do it on 50k.

When I was a kid, I swore that someday I would earn a lot of money and have $100 in the bank.

I succeeded in accomplishing that wish.

Only wish I had had a bit more foresight about inflation back then…

Since the thread title is (sic) “Who makes the most money?” and you have discounted investments and other income sources, it is pointless to answer.

You either want to know who has the bucks or who is the highest compensated employee. I would bet they won’t be the same person.

If I answered either/both questions, you would shake you head in disbelief at both answers for different reasons.

So, what do you want to know?
