Which xbox 360 games should I buy?

Hi all!

Thanks to all your wonderful advice here, I got myself an xbox 360 with a 60gb hard disk. What games should I get? I’ve already ordered a copy of gears of war refresh, but what are the classics I should own? I’m also game for buying some original xbox titles.

I like essentially everything except team sports games. I was thinking…

  • halo 3
  • bioshock
  • burnout
  • civilisation revolution

What games do you love?

Thanks!

Burnout was great.

I had a blast with Battlefield: Bad Company, and now I can’t wait for the sequel.

Legend 2 is great. I finished the main story line last week, but the game still has me hooked cos I’m tracking down side quests. I went out and picked up the original Legend at GameStop over the weekend - I never played it new, but 2 was so good I want to take a stab at 1 now.

And if you just want some really stupid and yet really fun shoot-em-up action, get a copy of Earth Defense Force 2017. You vs. giant bugs, huge alien landing ships, and towering mechs firing plasma rays. You can usually find it used for about ten bucks, and it’s *so *worth it.

I’ve currently got Halo 3, Call of Duty 5, Grand Theft Auto 4, The Orange Box, and Civilization: Revolution.

What’s your Gamertag? I’ll add you to the SDMB Gamertag so you can see the friends of that Gamertag when they’re online.

Fallout 3

Deadspace is a great deep space survival horror game!

also Braid

Mass Effect

Add Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare to your list. The online play is so much fun.

It says something (not entirely good) about the platform when 90% the games recommended here are first person shooters. =/

The sports games are good, but he specifically said he doesn’t play them. And thus, I didn’t know one game to suggest.

Saints Row 2. Better than GTA 4, IMO. (And I liked GTA 4).

If you’re going really old school, the two starwars: nights of the old republic games for the xbox are pretty awesome rpg’s.

Crackdown is a really fun, overlooked game (think of Grand Theft Auto, only you’re a cybernetic cop that can leap from building to building and toss cars around hulk-style) that can be picked up rather cheaply now.

I also second Dead Space, Mass Effect, and Fallout 3.

Thanks all!

Quite a list to work through there – are there any decent snowboarding games, by any chance?

pdts

Not really. The best one on Metacritic appears to be Amped3, but it has pretty mediocre reviews.

Something in the same vein that you might enjoy, however, is Skate and its sequel, Skate 2.

Other than Amped3, there’s also Stoked, another snowboarding game which you might want to keep an eye on when it gets released this month, but early reviews don’t look too favorable either.

for snowboarding there’s also Shaun White Snowboarding which didn’t get great reviews either. I miss SSX…

As for Skate/Skate2, they’re great games, but a bit steep of a learning curve. I certainly enjoy them infinity billion times better than the ridiculously stale Tony Hawk series.

And in regards to the original games you suggested:

  • halo 3
I’m personally not a huge fan of the series. The single player was pretty weak and just a rehash of everything that’s been done before (like, well, pretty much eveyrthing about it’s predecessors) but if you like Halo it’s a new(ish) halo game.

  • bioshock
Great game, though very similar to its predecessor, System Shock 2. Still, similar to SS2 means fan-freakin-tastic so I’d definitely recommend this game. Great atmosphere, great story, and just generally a damn fine experience

  • burnout
I got burned out (sorry) on this series a few years ago. It was fun, but I don’t expect many changes in the latest iteration

  • civilisation revolution

crap, missed the edit window and my work keyboard is wonky

  • civilisation revolution
If you like the computer civ games you’ll probably like this one, though it’s a bit more toned down and less micro-managing and such. They’ve streamlined a lot of it so it’s easier to pick-up-and-play. Again, though, it all depends on if you like the computer versions. If you’ve never played Civ than just realize you’re committing hours and hours of time for every game you start. I didn’t particularly enjoy Civ Rev, but if you want a simpler Civ than what’s available on the PC I’d recommend it.

other notables I’d throw in there are Mass Effect/Fallout/3 and even Fable 2 for your American-RPG fix (Fable 2 being the weakest of those 3, imo). COD4 for FPSs or a GRAW game if you like tactical shooters and maybe lump Saint’s Row 2 into the mix cause I thought GTA4 was sorta interesting but they forgot to put the fun in there, whereas SR2 concentrated on the fun that games are supposed to be about

I got my 360 for Christmas. Right now I have Gears of War, Fallout 3 and Far Cry 2. Gears of War is a good, if short and linear, game. The “cover” system wasn’t terribly intuitive for me, but after 45 minutes it was a blast. I heartily recommend Fallout 3.

Far Cry 2 is hell of a lot of fun, although it is very repetitive. The reason I will not recommend it to you is due to a godawful save game bug. It refused to save games properly for me at 64% completion. If you choose to buy this title, start making a new save game every time at around 40%, not that doing that will allow you to advance any further with the “privilege” or saving your game. Read about the bug here and here, if you like. Although the game was released on October 23, 2007 yet Ubsioft first acknowledged the bug (after multiple minor patches) here. Read the last post on page three to get an impression of how Ubisoft is treating their players.

I will admit it’s not the best game ever, but the total free roaming (you can go vereywhere on the mountain) stuff is pretty nice.

I can’t find any information on this game on Metacritic or IGN. I searched both Xbox and 360 games… Is this on another platform entirely?
