"White Out" Phenomenon

I’ve discovered that, when I use the hybrid mode, and when a thread gets super large, I can no longer access it. When I click the thread link, it shows a white page. It won’t load.

I’ve done some checking and, for me, the limit is somewhere over 10,000 replies to a specific thread. Does that have something to do with cache limitations? Has anyone else experienced this and, if so, does any solution exist?

I don’t usually use hybrid mode, but I just tried it on a thread that had about 12,000 replies. It went white for a few seconds until it loaded everything, and then it worked fine. This is on Firefox on a Windows 7 computer.

What browser/OS are you using, and can you link to a specific thread that gives you issues?

I’m using Windows 7 and Firefox, also. In the Pit, “Controversial Encounters” and “Stupid Republican Idea of the Day”.

Yep, it’s broke.

Chrome gives me an HTTP Error 500, which is an error code coming back from the server. Firefox apparently doesn’t display the error code correctly (or at all).

Error 500 is one of those general purpose error codes that doesn’t mean anything specific other than “something has gone wrong”. It is a server side error though, which means it’s a problem with the SDMB and not your browser or your computer.

I suspect it’s a problem in the version of vBulletin that we use. As such, I doubt that it will get fixed, unfortunately. I’ll go ahead and report it to our admin though just to see if there is anything we can do about it.

Thanks for your efforts!

Nothing to adjust that I can see on this side, so it is a server side thing.

While Thread Games has more of this problem than anywhere else (naturally), how many people use hybrid mode? (It seems to render fine in plain ol’ vanilla linear mode, at least it did for me.)

So how much of an issue is this and how many people does it affect?

The only other option that i can see would involve splitting or pruning these massive threads … is that something we need to do here?

Just trying to get the scope of this issue.
