So what? You expect me to believe that your freakish talking money is psychic or something?
Could we get a mod to change title to: Bobby Brown Murders Whitney Houston!
Like the guys who know the formula for Coca-Cola, they never travel together.
If we’re going for the disturbing yet somehow appropriate thread title, the front runner right now on the net is “Whitney Houston beats Bobby Brown to death”.
Its No surprise. She’s been on the down hill drug slope for a decade. What an incredible waste of raw talent. Such a Gifted singer & emerging actress and she snorts it all away.
She’ll always have a spot on my mp3 player. Her music was very special many, many years ago.
Re Bobby Brown. People say he corrupted her, but you know what? Whitney was brought up in Newark, NJ. I don’t know how hard she was brought up, but there aren’t a lot of sheltered people from Newark. He might have influenced her, but there was a reason the two of them were together.
Her records were the soundtrack of my childhood. “The Greatest Love of All” was the first song I ever learned by heart. Whatever her faults, the girl could sing. And I don’t think she was a half-bad actress either.
Crack certainly is wack.
Amy Winehouse and Whitney died not that many months apart. Tough time for addicts.
IIRC Whitney was at Amy’s funeral.
Im sorry but I have to agree here. Not everyone has the same views on celebrity and talent. I am sorry she dead for one reason, which to me is logical:she has a daughter and other family who will suffer. However this reminds me of when steve jobs died, the hero worship syndrome that sprung was scary. People die every day, and because they arent rich/famous no one gives a crap. What does the fact that she is “talented” have to do with anything? This is why we should mourn for her? I just dont get it. I have no interest in her death other than as I said that I am always sad for those who lose a loved one.
Also finding it offensive that people are saying that bobby brown is responsible etc - can a woman make her own choices? Can she have a free will distinct from a man?
Sometimes online forums remind me of that awesome story, The Lottery by Shirely Jackson.
Just this afternoon I was perusing the front pages of the scandal sheets while standing in line at the grocery store, and one of them (don’t remember which) had a headline and picture saying how bad she was looking. It’s a damn shame.
We don’t mourn “for” someone; we mourn someone. And we mourn for us, because we’ll miss the person who died.
In this case, we can mourn her because we’ll miss her talent, just like we miss John Belushi, and Janis Joplin, and yeah, Steve Jobs. It’s selfish, maybe, but we’re selfish creatures.
Houston we have a problem… again! Whitney emerges from a nightclub looking extremely worse for wear - Daily Fail article and pics of her on the 9th Feb. (Suspect they may revise the article so capturing the headline in all its glory.)
Maybe my perception is skewed 'cuz I can remember when she really was a hot mess, but she doesn’t look that bad in that picture. She’s got some meat on her bones, at least. Anyone can look weird if you photograph them in mid-sentence like that.
Speaking for myself, when someone like this dies, it ends up being a nostalgia trigger- I remember where I was in my life when I bought “Whitney” on cassette (cassette!), which then leads me to remember other memories associated with that time period. My age, my friends, school, home life, whatever. I suppose life’s too busy now that I’m 40 to offer many opportunities to sit back and reflect on my childhood. The death of a celebrity- and particularly a singer, as music will always represent good times and bad for me- gives me an excuse/reason to wax nostalgic. Did I know her personally? Did I really care about her life? No, of course not. But her influence on my life, however miniscule, is part of the tapestry of my life.
I also wonder if we don’t see the tragedy of the loss of talent and wonder if we would or could have done it differently. I don’t have that talent, so to see someone piss it away (as if I have any place to pass that kind of judgement) seems like such a waste. If I had that talent, my life would be so much different than how hers turned out. Maybe.
The verb to “mourn” is properly used with no supporting preposition, you are correct, however even the dictionary recognized that it is “often used with ‘for’”, so we can mourn “for” someone. That is a common pairing FYI, although it may not be gramatically correct, it is common usage.
Can anyone explain these anagrams?
Just last week I heard on the radio that she was dating somebody famous. Anybody else hear that? I can’t remember who it was…
I’d like to critique the photographer at age 48 after a night out. She doesn’t look that bad to me in those pictures.
They’re abbreviations not anagrams, and they are I Will Always Love You and the Star Spangled Banner.
SSB = “Star Spangled Banner”
IWALY = “I Will Always Love You”
I really liked her in her heyday in the 80s.
Please open a pit thread. It’ll be fun.
Whitney could sing the shit out of a song.
There is no obligation to say nice things about a recently deceased celebrity in an RIP thread, but posting just to say “why do you care” can be considered threadshitting, which is against the rules.
I suggest that those who are not fans of Ms. Whitney consider whether they need to post or not, and strongly encourage those who don’t care that she died not post at all.
