Who are our current "Abe Vigodas"? (people you might be surprised to learn are still alive)

Alan Tiegreen, best known for his illustrations for Beverly Clearly’s Ramona Quimby books, is still with us at somewhere between 89 and 90. (Here’s hoping he does as well as Cleary herself, who made it to 104.)

Fellow Sandy, Sandy Duncan, is also still alive at 79.

As kids, we were told she had a glass eye. A few years ago, I was surprised to learn this was not true.

According to her Wikipedia entry, this is what happened. Duncan was on the sitcom Funny Face. After the first episode of that show, Duncan had surgery to remove a brain tumor behind her left optic nerve. She is no longer able to see using her left eye. Duncan and her doctors decided to leave it in place. It still moves with the right eye. She does not have a glass eye.

You must have had her confused with Sandy Davis, Jr.

Yeah, I mean…Sandy Duncan is blind in one eye, but they left the real eye in.

There was a punk band named Sandy Duncan’s Eye for a brief period in the 80s.

Happy 99th birthday to Eloise illustrator Hilary Knight! Here’s to more.

Lee Grant is alive and one of our oldest Oscar winners. It appears to be unclear if she is 98, 99, or 100 but she is about that!

Bill Gaither, a man whose music seemed outdated 40 years ago, is still alive.

In fact, he’s only 89 years old. I thought that man was 80 thirty years ago.

As today’s New Yorker confirms, minimalist composers Terry Riley and Arvo Pärt are both alive and well at 90.

Here’s an interesting one. Ray Anthony and Mamie Van Doren got divorced in 1961. Sixty-four years later, they’re both still alive.

Does that make this the longest ex-marriage in history?

Gret question. There should be a standard of “married at least 5 years” before the divorce.

They qualify as they were married 6 years.

Can anyone beat this?

Jim Dale, who most of us here thought of as a fairly lightweight comic actor, now living in retirement in New York state aged 90.

I only knew him as an audiobook narrator, most famously of the US versions of the Harry Potter audiobooks, but I had no idea he was so old.

Marv Albert is 84 and still going. I was aware he had come back after his scandal, but I would have had to guess if he had died or not.

Yes!!!

(as in, no, he is not dead)

I found this line in his wikipedia article unintentionally funny:

In British film, along with Larry Dann, Angela Douglas, Patricia Franklin, Hugh Futcher, Alexandra Dane, Jill Goldston, Valerie Leon, Jacki Piper, Anita Harris, Bill Cornelius, Marian Collins, Valerie Shute and others, he is now among the last surviving actors to star in multiple Carry On films.

Here’s one that I didn’t notice at the time.

Those of us who were around back in the eighties probably remember Oliver North and Fawn Hall.

I just found out they are not only both alive but got married three months ago.

After re-connecting (!) at his wife’s funeral last November. He’s now 81 and she’s now 66.

I was also blissfully unaware of the happy couple. Good catch!
