In this picI can ID Brainiac (Middle), Luthor (FR) Gorilla Grodd (back) Doomsday & the Parasite. The rest are a mystery to me. Who are they?
I dunno, but I’m guessing that in “Hollywoodland” they’re his ego, the bottle, and a .38 revolver. rimshot
I think that might be Kalibak, actually. Too humanoid to be Grodd. Would be easier to tell if I could see more than his face. The semi-mechanical man next to Brainiac is the Cyborg (Hank Henshaw). I think that might be the first Toyman in front of him. That might be Atomic Skull in front of Doomsday, but I’ve never seen him in that costume. The two horned guys are ringing bells, but I can’t pinpoint it to more than ‘I’ve seen these guys before’. Ditto the mechanical skullhead behind Doomsday.
My fiance, who is a die-hard Superman fan, could only name a few, most of which you already named. Looks like these are hard ones.
Here are the ones he could add to yours:
Cyborg/Hank Henshaw (red guy)
Metallo (steel fella)
and we thought maybe the hairy guy was Kalabac (sp?) but I think that’s the one you called Gorilla Grodd so we’re likely wrong.
Duh. >< I realised that’s who he was just after I hit post. ><
One of the horned people may be Blaze. Looks sorta female, and has the same horns/outfit.
Good call…does look like her. The other one might be Lord Satanus.
And I, knowing what comic book geeks are like, realize I’m wasted here.
I’d like to know who the artist[s] of that piece is [are?] It looks very Marvelesque.
Looks rather like Jim Lee to me. Well, the woman looks like Lee, and none of the others look outside Lee’s style. Hard to tell without a signiature, though…
I highly doubt it’s Jim Lee. I think I’d recognize it, and I should quite think that he works with higher-quality colorists. Not that this picture is bad, but Lee is top 10 in the industry, easy.
What, no Mr. Mxyzptlk?
It seems that is the illustration for the cover of SUPERMAN VILLAINS SECRET FILES & ORIGINS #1 (June, 1998), which included profiles of:
- Metallo
- Lex Luthor
- Silver Banshee
- Cyborg
- Brainiac
- Obsession
- Rock
- Mister Mxyzptlk
- Mainframe
- Maxima
- Atomic Skull
- Riot
- Parasite
- Toyman
- Doomsday
Who’s which, though, I’ll have to leave to someone else. (Mr Mxyzptlk does seem to be missing).
The illustration is by Dan Jurgens (Pencils), Norm Rapmund (Inks), Patrick Martin (Colors & Seps)
One of the big changes in the comics world that bothered me is that after a talent like Jim Lee appeared on the scene, most of the new artists on the scene immediately afterward were imitators of his style, but nowhere near as good.
Okey dokey… it seems the contents of the comic I posted aren’t as much help as you’d think, since the villains named don’t all match up with those shown on the cover. So I did a little searching, and this is what I’ve been able to root out (bearing in mind that most of these characters have changed their appearances more than once over the years – I’ve seen any number of Brainiacs, but never with a beard).
Back row, left to right:
The yellow fellow with the extreme eye makeup is Mokkari, which makes the hairy one next to him Simyan, not Gorilla Grodd – they were both servants of Darkseid on Earth, apparently.
The two with the horns are Satanus, dark lord of a hell dimension, and his sister Blaze.
Not sure about the hooded one, but it looks a lot like the Time Trapper.
Next row, the big guys:
On the left, with the shark teeth, is Parasite, as Astro spotted.
I’m going to go with Tengu on Metallo, with Doomsday next to him.
Third row:
Cyborg, Brainiac, Obsession, and Atomic Skull
followed by Toyman, and our old friend Lex.
What, no Terra-Man?
He’s been beside himself since his latest appearance in 52.
Shoot. I can’t remember his name, but he’s a vampire-type who abducted kids and turned them into batwinged…kids. His powers were magic and he was able to manipulate Supe’s mind a bit, but he ended up skewered on a church ornament.
I think that’s Skyhook.
I am the RadiSkull!
And I will kill you one by one.
