Any problem with Jews, Moslems, or Buddists? I’m an extremly lapsed catholic so I have no specific agenda, I just don’t understand this attitude.
So what happened to:
Expiry dates: some companies pissed me off or are harmful to mankind more than others, some I’ve been boycotting for a while already, some are irredeemable.
Christians: No problems with any other religion, although if I found any truly blatant examples of piety from any other religion I might boycott that establishment also.
Circuit City
Boyscouts of America
Diamonds
Qwest
CVS - After 45 years of family business
Office Max - after the first rebate
Any product from countries I don’t like
Can’t think of any other businesses that are still in existence. I never complain about a poorly managed business. I just fire them ala Clark Howard.
WalMart
Diamonds
When I was in high school I boycotted Coca-Cola for a year or two (something having to do with apartheid, I think), and when the time came to stop boycotting them I realized that I didn’t like the taste of the soda. Still don’t. I’ve been a Pepsi (specifically Diet Pepsi) drinker ever since – but I will break down and have a Sprite every now and then.
These days I can’t think of any places worth boycotting except Cracker Barrel and the Boy Scouts of America, both for their policies regarding gay people. But there’s no Cracker Barrel nearby for me to deliberately not go to, and I’m not affected much by the BSA: I’m largely undecided about wanting kids, and even if I decide to procreate there’s no guarantee I’ll ever have a son, or that he’ll want to join the Boy Scouts. But if I ever do have a son who wants to join the Boy Scouts, I will say “no!” (unless they’ve changed their policy by then or something).
Make that at least two people.
Also, Exxon (which is now Mobil, I think).
Starbucks
Jiffy Lube
Andy’s Cheesesteaks & Cheeseburgers (specifically the Mt. Olive, NC location)
That’s all I can think of right now.
I’ve never heard anything about Domino’s being anti-choice, link? (I sometimes buy pizza there when they have good coupons but I’d switch all my business to Papa John’s if they did something egregious.)
So far the only place I’m refusing to shop is Wal-Mart but I figure it’s a lost cause. I mean, are K-Mart and Target really any better? At least those businesses (well Target, I don’t know about K-Mart) don’t support Bush financially but they’re still contributing to the demise of small businesses. I don’t feel as dirty shopping at Target as I do shopping at Wal-Mart though.
Gotta agree on the diamonds. Same with fur. And I guess Nestle’s, although I don’t eat any chocolate except for chocolate milk mix, and I’d choose the generic brand anyway because it’s cheaper. What they did is definitely sick though, and I wouldn’t support them if I did eat chocolate.
Exxon.
Steel freakin’ trap of a memory, baby. Hazelwood can darn my shorts.
I boycott all of the local Hooterville (midwestern town where I am currently exiled) news broadcasts. They have too many important news stories being pushed down so they could ramble on and on about some trivial sports story. Sure, they are catering to their audience, and I’m sure they don’t do it every night, but when I gave them their umpteenth chance, they were doing it again. So enough’s enough. They can do whatever they want with their program—I don’t have to watch.
I hear local news updates on the radio. I don’t ever really think I’ll watch the local news here. I’m so much happier just not watching.
Why Southwest?
Schwan’s - the guys that deliver yummy ice cream door-to-door.
See, dozens of mom-and-pop shops are supplementing their employees’ pay to make up the difference between their regular wage and their military wage. Schwan’s is a muti-million dollar company, and they don’t. So when a guy with a wife and four kids under 7 and a mortgage calls me, weeping, asking for some financial assistance because he went from making arond $55,000 to around $18,000, I get pissy. I know Schwan’s isn’t the only company that does this, but it’s the only one I know about, and it pisses me off.
The Bay, Zellers, Walmart, The Gap are all on the never ever list. The Bay and Zellers for reasons they know very well. Walmart and the Gap because of reasons everyone knows.
Blockbuster is receiving a temporary snubbing but I will probably end up back there someday.
Best Buy is on thin ice.
My alltime best boycott was K-Mart. I don’t even remeber what they did wrong to me but I started to boycott them before I was ten years old. Now, as far as I know they are all out of Canada. Shows them.
Snopes has a summary, although Dominos has never made a stance either way, the Owner has given a lot to the pro-lifers, including some implicated in blowing up doctors, I believe.
Nestlé is far more than Chocolate (Stouffers, Purina, L’oreal, Friskies, Taster’s Choice, Nestea, Carnation, CoffeeMate, tons of bottled water, to name a very few)
The State of Florida. This will expire next week, if they don’t pull a repeat of 2000.
I’m boycotting Mel Gibson.
I don’t know how long it will last though, because I like too many of his movies too much, and I may not hold out. I’m weak that way.
Any company that has a voluntary in-house policy of selling a civilian-legal product to “LEO or Active Military Only.”
