Who buys honkin' great big DVD boxsets?

I was browsing Amazon yesterday and I found this

and

this

Who buys this stuff? Are there really folks out there who saw an episode of Star Trek and are prepered to spend $1000+ on a set of 200 DVDs? I can understand shelling out for TOS and then getting all of Next Gen a year or two later. Last year Amazon was offering a box set of all of Criterion’s films. I like Criterion discs. I already own around 40 of them. But I just can’t wrap my head around the notion that anyone would suddenly decide that they had to own 200+ incredibly eclectic movies. Anyone got any idea of who buys these, or why?

Last year, Amazon UK offered a Star Trek set (TNG?) in a custom Borg Cube. It cost about $500.

They sold out in a few days.
They should have waited.

I want that Star Trek one so bad I can taste it.

I’d never spend that much, of course, unless I hit the Powerball. But when I do, that’s the first thing I’m buying.

I’m waiting for the complete Doctor Who boxset
As for who buys those big boxsets, libraries maybe? (Tho they may have gotten the collection picemel erlier)

Lots of folks buy $2000 jewelry, why not $2000 in DVDs? Arguably more practical.

The Warner collection is a pretty good deal once you break it down.
237 discs. 198 movies. $1450.
That’s less than $7.50 per film. Not my cup o’ tea but for the first time DVD player owner / movie lover it’s a nice collection.

Single guys with cash.

Oddly enough, even though I have pretty much no interest whatsoever in the startrek galaxy, I would … and the same with StarBores \\ i mean star wars

Let me make it a bit clearer …

If I won the god lottery and had copious amounts of money to spare, I would go apeshit on amazon and other media selling sites. I love having friends visit me, and I like to offer entertainment. If there isnt anything on TV/cable, we drag out dvds and cds and watch movies/listen to music. I am also known for having a place where if you choose to grab a book and a drink and sit around reading instead of doing anything else =) I would buy pretty much any movie that I think would appeal to my friends, same with music, and I would make sure I had space for around 100 thousand books of all genres, and subscriptions to a lot of different magazines [and I know the perfect person to come and live in aruMansion and be the media librarian =)]

It’s funny you mention that – I just bought the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Chosen Collection, which is all seven seasons and one new DVD of extras repackaged in an attractive box set: 40 DVDs in all. However, I got it for an amazing deal ($102). Those other sets the OP linked to seem ridiculous to me by comparison, but then again, I love Buffy and I hate Star Trek.

Same here. :stuck_out_tongue:

Both the Warner set and (especially) the Criterion Collection seem like solid investments to me. The only thing that’s preventing me from owning them is a lack of ready cash.

Plenty of people drop absurd amounts of cash for home theatre systems. Why not buy movies en masse, on the cheap, and have good stuff to watch for a couple or few years?

People who feel the need for that much Star Trek, on the other hand, probably ought to be institutionalized.

If its from the Beeb, you may be waiting a while…

I would buy these so I could be like my mate Dave and have (according to another mate) lots of great films I don’t watch :stuck_out_tongue:

If I had a spare $1500 I wouldn’t mind the Warner set. It would be great. Of Course if I had a spare $1500 I would save another $1000 and buy a large Plasma TV.

I bought the Monty Python DVD set when it was on sale for $89. I think it was from Amazon but it might have been Buy.com

Hey, I resemble that remark!

I’ll end up buying it all anyway. One season set at a time.

Broken up into smaller sets with each different Doctor getting his own to make it more managable.

I would’ve bought the Buffy set if I didn’t already own the individual seasons. I have little interest in Star Trek, but the Warner collection is amazing. I have several of the titles in my collection, but I’d probably enjoy owning at least 75% of what they’re offering in that set. It’s a huge bag of cash to spend on DVDs at one time, but it’s a good deal for what you’re getting.

On a smaller scale, they’ve got things like the complete set of James Bond, or the complete Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, which are good, if expensive, presents.

Where? I’ve been looking for a good price.

Well, I don’t know if there is anything I would want that contained over 200 DVD’s, but I bought each of my brothers the first season of 24 that they both liked a lot, and I bought myself the huge LOTR extended version box set that I really like. I might treat myself to the new 3 disc version of Wizard Of Oz (see my thread from about a week ago on Wizard Of Oz for details) but that is only $40 or so. So boxed sets, yes - but those hugeass 200+ collections? Probably not

I guess it depends on how much of a fan you are. There are lots and lots of television shows where I have seen every episode, but do not feel the need to OWN every episode. Recently I saw an ad for the complete Sex In The City series for $300. I like the show and saw every episode when it came out on HBO, but - uh, I don’t like it that much to plunk down three bills.

Too bad you have to own a Tardis in order to get it.

This has been on my list for quite a while, and I am probably going to give in and buy it at some point. The last time I checked though, it was only $359, and now it’s up to $411.

The only reason I’m buying MASH and Law & Order one season at a time is that they’re being released that way, and I don’t want to wait years to get my complete sets (although it is tempting to have them all in one big, matching box – L&O in particular has changed the format and design for each season).
