This is driving me crazy. I can’t find deodorant in a gel - they’re all antipersperants now. Ever since I moved to Texas 6 years ago, they’ve been scarcer and scarcer, until I can’t find them anywhere. I’ve checked out all the local Albertsons, Targets, Wal-Marts, Sams Clubs, Shopcos, Krogers, Tom Thumbs, CVS, Walgreens, and so on within fifteen minutes driving time from my house.
I can’t use an antipersperant for more than a few days before breaking out into a rash. I tend to be safe with deodorants. I refuse to use a spray, and I kind of like not smelling like stank, so I’m stuck with using a stick. I know I could see a dermatologist, but come on - perscription deodorant? I’d rather rub raw garlic and anise on my body. (Note to self - try this and see if it really works.) I really like the gels because they tend to chafe less.
Have all gel-based underarm ointments switched to deodorant/antipersperant? Any Dopers in the Dallas/Fort Worth area know where I can score some that are deodorant only? Barring that, are there any Dopers who could ship me a case of gel deodorant?
Do you have Tom’s of Maine at all in your area? I know they make deodorant only sticks. The sticks are more gel than paste like and their ingredients are more natural than most brands.
To add to this, here’s a press release from their website that talks about the contents.
I usually wind up with a rash from aluminum if I use a regular deodorant with antiperspirant, too. I’ve been using the unscented version for several years and haven’t had any problems, thank the hundred little gods.
It may be worth a trip to Central Market (I-30 and Hulen). I don’t know for sure if they’ll have what your looking for, but they do have a lot of ‘different’ brands. If nothing else, you’ll have fun looking around.
I’ve noticed that they’re getting scarcer too. My preference is for Dry Idea unscented gel and I clean out the shelf whenever it appears. Secret makes an unscented gel too that isn’t too bad.
I like the Tom’s, but not as much as the gels.
Those waxy white antiperspirant sticks make a mess of my clothes and create maggoty dingleberries in my pit hair.
Don’t they make the roll ons anymore? I used to love the roll on but couldn’t find it.
But I second Tom’s of Maine. They are a lot more like gel than the usual sticks. I use an unscented one and I have pretty sensitive skin (can’t wear anti-perpirnats, they make my pits actually swell up with the nasty rash.)
Hub can’t use anti-perspirants either. He also can’t use the stick/gel kind so he’s stuck with Old Spice spray or Axe spray. Seems like there was another one but neither of us can remember what it was.
Suburban Plankton uses Tom’s of Maine gel stick, unscented. Works great for him. Me, I need an anti-perspirants, but have used the Tom’s on occasion when I’m out of mine.
tashabot, I checked a local Costco a couple of months ago, but all they had in gel was anti-p. I suppose it might be seasonal, or maybe geographic.
According to Tom’s of Maine’s website map, there are several locations nearby I can look at. Thanks, Constant Reader and y’all others for the suggestion.
Well, in light of yesterday’s events in Virginia, I’m kind of embarassed that I even wrote that subject line.
