Mosier, read my post #13, why does the rest of the U.S. get a free pass, but the South is the scapegoat of our political problems.
I also wonder what are your political leanings? I assume you vote Democrat. Surely you know for instance that of the five Democrat Presidents that have held office since WWII, four of them were from states that you want to sink into the ocean. Maybe you also need to be reminded that more people in Texas voted for Kerry in 2004 than in Rhode Island, Vermont, Delaware, DC, Maryland, and Maine combined. Painting with a broad brush is ignorant.
Ok, you got me, you fucking semantic lawyer. If you want, you can just assume that I said “Muslim” instead of “Arab”, or you can claim that my misuse of the word proves that you’re right and just walk away.
When the manifestly guilty go free, the problem lies not with the defense. The onus was on the prosecution; the fault is theirs. It doesn’t serve justice to deal punishment without a strong prosecution being brought, and the manner in which we test the strength of a prosecution is by playing it against an adversarial defense.
Nah, its not about semantics, its about showing that you are equally as ignorant about Middle Eastern culture as you are about Southern culture.
This is one of the greatest sentences I have ever read.
I don’t think your misuse of the word proves that I’m right; it just proves that you’re ignorant.
(On one small point, on which many people, sadly, are ignorant. It’s not, in itself, a huge deal. But it certainly isn’t helping your case.)
You’re putting words into my mouth, first of all. I didn’t say that the South causes all of our political problems, or that the rest of the US gets a free pass. I said that Southern culture is fucked, and causes more harm than Arab (but I meant “Muslim”) culture.
What you’re trying to imply is that I can’t disapprove of things happening elsewhere, if I hate the South. That’s like saying I’m not allowed to hate apple pie if watermelons give me diarrhea.
So is the North, and everywhere else in the country - the POOR, regardless of race, are oppressed everywhere. Read about American labor history sometime.
"I’ve been in many demonstrations all across the South, but I can say that I had never seen, even in Mississippi, mobs as hostile and as hate-filled as in Chicago.” -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
More intense than in the Middle East? No way.
What’s your proof for this generalization?
I’ve got to stick up for the South here. It gets a bad rap. The South is the place that produced, for example, almost all of America’s music: blues, jazz, country, rock. It’s produced a lot of great American literature, like Mark Twain, Harper Lee, and William Faulkner. And like neorxnawange said, a lot of political progressives have come from there too.
I’ll tell you what’s “fucked” - making hateful generalizations about any group of people is fucked. You shouldn’t hate “The South” or “The Arabs.”
Not only that, but one was a lawyer. And they were all members of the government!
Whoever has the best lawyer team deserves to win. Who cares whether the guy actually killed his wife, or whether that pair of pants was actually worth 45 million dollars?
Sound fucked to you? Yeah, me too.
Ok so if the South doesn’t cause all our political problems, and the rest of the U.S. doesn’t get a free pass then why is it you are singling them out? Southern Culture is fucked? What does fucked mean, and in exactly what ways is the South different from the rest of the country that also elected your national representatives and (successfully) pushed their racist and homophobic agenda on you?
Am I allowed to call “straw man” here, since you and the guy you quoted are both attacking my voting record without actually having any idea who I have voted for?
Well, that post of mine was just me having some fun. It’s nothing substantive.
Did you read post number 18?
Who did you vote for for POTUS in 2004?
Yeah did you back up post #18 with cites showing that those things you attribute to the South cannot also be found all over the U.S.?
Whoever makes the most compelling case to a jury or judge, in line with the demands of the law, deserves to win. The truth matters, but it’s hard to get at the truth. So we approach it by proxy, through a formalized debate called a trial, final pronouncement being passed by presumably impartial referees. That seems reasonable to me.
There are cases in which I could be brought to agree with you, aspects of the system which could use improvement. For example, people may feel bullied into settling a case because they cannot afford to go to court. This is unfortunate; ideally, everyone would have means of access to supremely capable representation. No doubt, this is a point on which the two of us could find some common ground. But the generalizations you are making are too broad, and the motives you are decrying too unsubstantiated, for me to concur with the brunt of your opinions in this thread.
So your educated opinion is that we should sink into the sea?
Fuck you, moron.
Erm…do I really need a cite that says the south had a higher proportion of slave owners, more local government tolerance and acceptance of segregation, worse historical support of public education (easily shown by test scores, number of degrees received per capita, tooth decay per capita, high school graduation per capita, and money spent on education programs), and more deeply religious people than other parts of America?
If so, you can find it yourself. You might have to drive awhile before you reach a decent library, though. Just keep going until you see a place that has books, but no confederate flag or public religious symbols for at least a mile.
edit: typo.
