I celebrated March 1st by wearing a leek on my lapel, got nothing planned for the 8th!
Today is the day Stalin died and on the 25th anniversary I had a panic attack, which subsided a few years later after my father assured me Stalin’s death was cooler than Khomeini’s.
We haven’t celebrated Franco’s death because it’s too soon to tell.
I was surprised the first time I heard of the International Women’s Day as a flowers-and-gifts day, from a Russian colleague. Here in Norway, it’s a day for political activism – an event in the city centre with political speeches and a march, with people carrying slogans. I’ve mostly degenerated to facebook activism myself, but I get out of the sofa to join political marches at least twice a year: 8th March and 1st May.
Had to look it up, but quite honestly now I know I doubt that i will be .
Why would I want to celebrate losing a hour of sleep?
with pie or steak?
I prefer the latter celebration.
It’s my sister’s birthday.
I celebrate the First of May every year.
Found out about it last year, from a Facebook friend in the Ukraine. Didn’t remember it was on March 8, though.
Celebrate March 8? I thought that most dopers were more inclined to rant about Daylight Savings Time.
I knew that some of these holidays fall on different days in other places, but didn’t know this specific date.
Lebanon?
Early March is weird. Do you beat your boy Friend? I had a nightmare and dreamed he was a goblin and whooped his butt and he was nice and just threw me out of the bed.
Most times we don’t do that.
Is he still dead?
And then correct you and tell you it’s actually daylight saving time.
Still no one wants to give out what this is?
Post #8. (Its International Women’s Day).
I don’t. I had to look it up. I’d heard of it in passing before.
Between two holidays on the 14th and St Patricks Day the holiday season is already full enough.
We celebrate March 8th. My husband is Russian and it’s a big holiday in Russia. He usually gives me flowers. He also calls female relatives and close female (Russian) friends to wish them a happy day. We’re in the U.S. now, so most people don’t have a clue what March 8th is. But it is cause for much celebration in Russia.
It’s big in Vietnam too. When I lived there, they were often surprised to here it’s basically unknown in America, despite being called International Women’s Day. Now that I know of its existence, I do see it mentioned in the media here most years.
Happy birthday, scareyfaerie!
Its a biggie in Mexico. Naturally. Here women rule.
