Who here celebrates March 8?

So the savior of the Jews is resurrected as their killer was born…I guess I’ll just get stoned.

But I would not feel all alone…

The real day to celebrate is March 6. You should fall on your knees and thank whatever God you believe in that you could be so fortunate and well loved as to be so blessed.

No, my calendar only mentions Daylight Saving Time.

So I guess I’ll call up someone and give him an hour of my time.

Yeah, cause even grandpa is getting stoned. And he lived through the time that you got it delivered by Capone. And it was probably on a first name basis…

Huh? I don’t know nuttin…But we lived fine in the depression.

Why would anyone celebrate the disappearance of flight MH370?

I see someone feels strongly about the Battle of the Alamo.

Yes, I’ve always liked White Day too.

If it is International Women’s Day, I’m slightly aghast that it is celebrated in some places by giving frilly gifts.

Yes, I’ve known all my life what it is, but it is not “celebrated” that way back home. More along lines of political speeches and activities as mentioned above.

Actually, you aren’t that far off ---- it’s my and my brothers birthday. He’s Mexico and I’m Texas.

I’m married, everyday is woman’s day.

Nothing on March 8 for me, but let’s not forget NH5D (National High Five Day) on the 3rd Thursday of every April.

You bet! Can it really be four decades since the cinema was set back 900 years?

It is widely celebrated here in Italy. Women are given gifts of flowers from the Mimosa tree, which always blossom just in time.

You celebrate Hitler’s birthday??? :eek::D.

Yes, dear.

(I’m not really her husband, just filling in. Wait — that doesn’t quite sound right. Never mind.)

I’m a little surprised that it might be such a mystery. Don’t most schools have some kind of event or something? Everywhere I’ve studied or worked there’s been some kind of reminder. But as hildea says about Norway, it’s more about activism than giving flowers, like on Mother’s Day.
Also, it’s on my Google calendar.

1911 - International Women’s Day is launched in Copenhagen, Denmark, by Clara Zetkin, leader of the Women’s Office for the Social Democratic Party in Germany.

I’m surprised it hasn’t caught on, seems like a great marketing ploy to sell stuff.

I know it as International Working Women’s Day. In Spain it’s “celebrated” with demonstrations. Commemorated would be a more appropriate word, I think.

The idea of trying to give a bunch of flowers to, say, those ladies from the unions who according to my Dad were both harder and more-reasonable negotiators than the men (less likely to demand something stupid just because the union said so), seems kind of ludicrous. There’s many other things they would rather get. A raise. A nicer break room. Childcare at work. Study assistance: stuff such as the company reimbursing on official language courses, if you pass them, or being allowed to study at work if you’ve already fulfilled your duties.

At the bar yesterday I asked a dozen or so women if they knew what March 8th was. Nobody knew.

Well, what do you expect? They were women after all.

For the record, the Features sections in the local English-language newspaper will have some sort of story, but otherwise it doesn’t seem to be much publicized in Thailand. I just asked the wife if she knew it and she did, but she’s a bit more savvy and international than most Thai women.
