Who here celebrates March 8?

Yes. I always think it’s a bit funny in Italy. On the one hand it’s like: “I’m a woman, so the man has to buy me chocolates and give me mimosa” and on the other hand “let’s celebrate strong independent women”. Not that being strong and independent means you can’t ever receive chocolates and flowers, but I’m not completely sure what they are celebrating.

That’s what confused me as well. I knew it was IWD, but it didn’t seem to fit with people mentioning offering gifts to people, so I assumed there was something else celebrated today, possibly some American thing, but couldn’t figure out on google what it was. :dubious:

Then it will probably blow your mind that the Ukrainian friend I mentioned celebrates it by wearing frilly stuff and posting pics. (And, no, she’s not that sort of Facebook friend.) She also makes a lot of jokes that confirm traditional gender roles.

Putin, in his infinite wisdom, commemorated March 8th this year by inviting the mothers of various accomplished people (actors, scientists, athletes, etc.) to the Kremlin. Not women who were accomplished in their own right. It was a lovely celebration of sexism on International Women’s Day. I’m sure the irony was lost on Putin and his moronic advisers.

Does anyone still celebrate May 25? Or is that just in the UK?

Well, Jordan does, assuming you mean that country’s independence from Britain.

No, I was thinking of Towel Day.
