Actually, this is a serious question. I’d like to make a little bit of extra money before and around Christmas (I have a new job lined up that won’t start until mid-January.) So I was trying to think of some kind of temp work that might be available around that time, and mall Santas immediately leaped to mind. However, that seems like it would be a gender-limited job. But it seems like they usually have “Santa’s helpers” (elves, Mrs. Santa, etc.) around at the same time and place. Who hires them? Does anyone have any leads or ideas??
So I googled ‘Mrs Santa Claus’ and got a sponsored link to Anne Summers Sexy Costumes: Dressing up, sex toys, lingerie, DVDs, books & more at Ann Summers.
Evem if Santa doesn’t exist I sure hope Mrs. Santa does.
You my friend must listen to the Santaland diaries. Unforntunatly NPR is technologically backward and you need realplayer but it is really really funny. This is the story of David Sedaris’s expeience working as an elf in at Macy’s in New York. He was hired directly by Macy’s
Temporary job agencies sometimes do the hiring instead of the stores directly. When I was temping in New York years ago, I almost had a job as a Santa, but I ended up delivering gifts on behalf of the agency instead.
Really? Or did you just say that for humorous effect? Because Mrs Claus is a fairly well known character in her own right in the United States and I had assumed it was so in other countries as well.
It’s a bit more centralized than it was a few years ago. Most elf hiring in the US is handled by the Seasonal Temps division of L. Fish Furniture, Inc. In Europe, most of it goes through Elf Petroleum. There are still a few independent elf workshops around, though, and it would be good to find one or two and apply there, too.
However, in all my years I have never seen an effigy of Mrs. Santa in a Christmas shop, any other shop, on hoardings, on TV advertising, on wrapping paper, on a Christmas tree, on decorations, anywhere.
I hope someone can confirm the absence of a UK wife, or at least the obscurity of her existence. One so hates to be ridiculed for one’s ignorance.
Perhaps Mr Claus is the very traditional kind of husband, who wants his wife back home in the kitchen, while he’s out at work, ringing bells, scaring toddlers, and being photographed with said toddlers on his lap.
Well, so far the most helpful suggestions have been temp agencies and malls. I’m actually SERIOUS about this, believe it or not. It just seems that at one point I heard something about some kind of centralized… Santa-hiring… agency. Or maybe that was the Macy’s Santas???

When I did the elf thing, it was an agency who would hire out all the Santas, Elves, Mrs. Clauses, and photographers.
It involved a two day course in Santa school, including tips on how you must act in costume (no smoking, drinking, etc anywhere where children can see you in costume), and help with getting a good photograph from children who may be scared of Santa, making sure your costume was well cared for an you were presenting the “image” of an elf correctly, how to answer children’s questions about elf work, and responses if a kid thinks Santa is not real.
The agency which hired out Santa’s to malls & functions also rented clowns, Marilyn Monroe look-alikes, hostesses for gala’s and other large functions, and a higher class strippers (props, costumes, and no full frontal nudity).
