Who is this German painter?

And what paintings are these?

As described by a co-worker, who is increasingly frustrated at not being able to remember; One painting is a portrait of a young girl with “old” eyes, the other is of a legless soldier, lying in a street as prostitutes pass by.

The painter was aiming for something satirical and painted around the start of the 20th century.

The second one sounds like Otto Dix or George Grosz. Not sure on the first.

first one sounds like Kathe Kollwitz

Since this is about art, Cafe Society is better for it.

Here’s one by Dix with a legless soldier and prostitutes- it’s the left segment of a triptych.

soldier

He’s standing on crutches, but in my head he was lying down, so maybe that’s it.

Sounds like George Grosz to me, although he shared a lot of thematic similarities with Otto Dix.

Thanks for the replies, I’ll have to wait for Monday to pass them by my coworker

Pick up any book about the Dada art movement; it began as a WW1 protest (when Grosz and Dix first gained attention) and progressed into anti-commerce, anti-capitalism, anti-machine and general anti-convention.

There was a touring exhibit of Dada art a couple years ago; I caught the National Gallery leg of it in DC.
