By the end, Phoebe was the only one I could stand, but she was my favourite, even in the early seasons, when I DIDN’T want to punch Ross, Rachel and Chandler, and wouldn’t refuse to be in the room with Joey and Monica.

Phoebe did indeed have a lot of quirkiness, but yeah, it could get to be too much, and she had a mean streak, too, that was not well-hidden.
I saw no evidence that she was trying to hide it. I rather enjoyed it when, irritated by a squabbling Rachel & Monica, she overpowered them both simultaneously, pinching an ear on each so hard they were forced to their knees, and not letting go till they apologized. And then, stroking their heads lovingly, said, “You know, if this were prison, you’d both be my bitches.”
Agreed - people seem to think Phoebe was nice and good, but she was not so nice and good.

I always identified with Ross in the earlier seasons, and apparently never watched the later ones.
Agreed. Although I have no great dislike of Joey, but Ross has to be the most annoying tv character outside of Mr Bean.
