Who is your favorite Robin Hood?

Following on the thread about the new Robin Hood: Pick your favorite.

The classic? The modern? The funny? The duck? Take your pick and tell us why.

I wouldn’t have voted for him, but I expected to see Kevin Costner on your list. Did you think he was THAT bad?

I didn’t think anyone would vote for him!

You have Russel Crowe but not Kevin Costner? And you misspelled Cary Elwes’ name.

Double shame. A pox on your house!

Edit: I voted for Elwes.

Only Flynn was the real deal…

You should have listed Douglas Fairbanks Sr. The first action star. I saw his version about 20 years ago in an arts theater that had a live pianist playing the score. People really got into cheering Robin Hood and hissing the villains. At the end everyone stood up and cheered the movie and then turned 180 degrees to cheer the piano player.

Daffy is the only one I can ever remember by name; I don’t think I’ve ever bothered to watch any Robin Hood flicks.

As John Moschitta said in 10 Classics in 10 Minutes, “It’s the one work of literature that everybody knows, but no one has read.”

And you just beat me to it. My vote would’ve gone to Flynn it it weren’t for this egregious omission.

Can I use my vote to vote AGAINST him?

Errol Flynn, with Cary Elwes close behind.
What surprises me is the strong showing by The Fox. I assume it means the Hood analog in The Court Jester. I love that movie as much as anybody, but The Fox isn’t even on screen for more than a few minutes. (Now, Danny Kaye pretending to be The Fox in the opening number? That I’ll vote for.)

OK, I realize now the fox is the Disney animated version. :smack:

I’ve only seen a few, but the original image in my head, of how he dies, hasn’t been matched by anything I’ve seen on film. Dying because of a woman, bleeding out and having Little John help him draw his last arrow so he can be buried where it lands…far more poignant than anything I’ve seen yet. In fact, nothing I’ve seen even includes that scene, that I can recall.
Perhaps I’ve just missed one that’s more faithful to the book.

I wish Q had made Worf Robin instead of Jean Luc.

‘I am not a merry man’ is the only line I can recall out of any Robin Hood visuals I have ever seen. :stuck_out_tongue: (Ok, excepting a few from Men in Tights, I am sure)

There’s a single source book for Robin Hood? Riiiiiiight.

As for ones missing from the poll, I nominate Captain Picard, John Cleese, Frank Sinatra, and Kevin Kline in a Schlitz Malt Liquor commercial.

PRINCE JOHN (Richard Lewis): Why should the people listen to you?!

ROBIN HOOD (Cary Elwes): Because, unlike some Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent!

Connery, Sean and Hepburn, Audrey

From that list, I picked Elwes, but I did enjoy Captain Picard as Robin Hood.

Brian Bedford.

I liked Patrick Bergin in the made-for-TV movie Robin Hood. Too bad it was completely overshadowed by the release that year of Costner’s version (although I have to say, the music for Costner’s version was awesome). So I voted for someone you forgot.

I like the Disney cartoon best, closely followed by John Cleese from Time Bandits.
Has anyone here ever seen any of TV’s first Robin Hood, Patrick Troughton? I understand that the tapes still exist in the archives, unlike most of his Doctor Who episodes. :frowning:
