Just added Kevin Costner, despite the havoc this will wreak with the otherwise meticulous methodology of this rigorously scientific poll.
I picked Errol Flynn, but came very, very close to choosing the Fox.
Glad to see someone else mention Patrick Bergin, too. His movie was far and away better than the contemporaneous Costner version.
Another vote for Doug Fairbanks. That man could really buckle some swash.
I stuck Michael Praed on there-the gritty feel of that series simultaneous with the whole mysticism angle truly sold me on it.
Errol Flynn defined the role. Even more so than Fairbanks.
Second is Connery. Robin and Marian is a lovely retelling, one that you learn to appreciate more as you get older.
My response precisely. Flynn is everything that’s iconic about the character: dash, bravado, sexiness, athleticism, nobility, rakishness, wit, trickiness, empathy, a flair for the dramatic, a touch of arrogance, romance, and passion for justice.
And my second favorite Robin is, believe it or not, an animated fox beautifully and roguishly voiced by Brian Bedford. My first crush; I wore out the grooves on my record of the film by listening to it night after night.
Cary Elwes would’ve made a great Robin in a more straightforward version of the legend, but I don’t really like the movie, so that gets some points deducted.
Frank Sinatra in Robin and the 7 Hoods, Michael Praed, Sean Connery, Cary Elwys, and last but not least Errol Flynn, even though I liked him better in Captain Blood.
Disney’s fox was my first Robin Hood–he’ll always have the first spot in my heart. Errol Flynn is just a step behind, though.
Pssst…tell you a secret…
Disney’s Robin Hood is one of the two reasons I still keep a VCR (I prolly should replace it with a DVD already ).
I first saw it in the theatre when my dad used to drop us kids off for the Saturday matinee while he went to the cigar store. We convinced him to take us again the next day and he and Mom saw it with us. It. was. that. awsome.
Yup, also (YMMV) smokin’ hot. As a teenage girl at the time, that was kind of what I wanted from a Robin Hood.
I voted for the Fox, mainly because of the phrase, “Begone, long one” in the movie. My husband and I use this all the time. Oh, and that “Phoney King of England” song.
- Daffy Duck
- The Fox
- Errol Flynn
- Kevin Costner
I trust my vote represents all right-minded 26 year old males. (Minus perhaps switching 3 and 4).
Yep on both counts.
No votes for Rocket Robin Hood?
I voted for the Fox. It was one of my favorite videos to watch over and over when i was a little kid (i’m 29 now).
Harold Warrender, from the film Ivanhoe.
My first exposure to the story was the Bugs Bunny cartoon, Rabbit Hood, featuring a cameo by Errol Flynn’s Robin.
Little John: Don’t you worry, never fear, Ro…
Bugs Bunny: Yeah, I know, Robin Hood will soon be here. He robs from the rich and he gives to the poor. Yo-ho, he goes skipping, tra-la, through Sherwood Forest, helping the needy and the oppressed. Ah, you’ve been saying that through the whole picture! Well, where is he?
Little John: Aw, you should not talk mean like that, because there he is!
Errol Flynn/Robin Hood: [Appears in live-action footage] Welcome to Sherwood.
Bugs Bunny: [Bugs stares in astonishment for a moment] Nah, that’s silly. It couldn’t be him.
I voted for the duck because he’s the only Robin Hood who had a buck and a quarter quarterstaff.
Does Art Carney from the Batman TV show count as a Robin Hood?
Me too. That was an awesome version.
Errol Flynn was amazing and would be by far my favoritest (but for one thing). I just love him and that movie was enormously entertaining. That is what you call a swashbuckler.
However, I voted for the Fox, because as LawMonkey says, he was my first Robin Hood and he’ll always have a place in my heart.
