Just settling a bet - which of the above three (or more!) unrelated 1980s songs comes first to mind when you hear the title “The Power of Love”?
From ‘Back to the future’
Huey Lewis - I’ve never heard of the Frankie Goes to Hollywood song, and my knowledge of the Jennifer Rush one was, until looking it up, knowing the song, but having no idea who sang it, and having taken the wrong lyric to be the title.
I thought it was Candy Goes to Hollywood.
There were other songs called ‘Power of Love’ apart from Huey Lewis?
There were if you grew up in the 80’s!
Don’t get me wrong - Huey Lewis was my first response, too. But this thread came out of an argument I had at work about who sung it, and it took an embarrassing amount of time before we realized that we weren’t talking about the same song.
Don’t need no credit card - Huey Lewis and the News.
Yeah…I’m having a hard time imagining growing up in the 80s and not having ‘I’m your ladyyyyy’ being belted out immediately causing you to flashback. >_> (Even if you never knew the title.)
Huey and The News came to mind first, Celine second. I never heard of Jennifer Rush and still don’t know who she is as the video linked is not available in my country.
Celine’s version was an (inferior) cover of Rush’s.
I’m surprised that so many people are unfamiliar with Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Were they unknown in the States, beyond “Relax”?
IIRC, that was in one of the creepier scenes in Body Double. I think that movie gave me flashbacks.
Two Tribes was a big hit in southern California.
Wow, so I’m the only one so far for whom the Frankie Goes to Hollywood version popped up first? Wouldn’t have thought that.
Jennifer Rush that can be seen in the US.
I would not call this superior. I would not call it inferior either. It is exactly the same. Exactly. Celine should be ashamed of herself, copying so blatantly. Although a thousand demerits to Jennifer for that horribly '80s Mafioso video.
I asked my husband who sings Power of Love and he said Luther Vandross.
I do not remember this song at all. It supposedly won awards.
None. The answer is Arlo Guthrie.
I only know of the Huey Lewis one and I am the right generation being class of '84. It was a big hit.
For Frankie Goes to Hollywood; I only remember Relax.
Jennifer Rush I do not remember at all.
