Who sang "Power of Love"

Somewhat strangely, Air Supply also did a cover of it (switching the pronouns).

I mean, what exactly do you think a “cover” is? You don’t have to do it differently if you don’t want to. Yes, it’s fun when an artist takes a song in a completely different direction, but there’s nothing in the rulebook that says you have to. I’m sure as the writer, Rush was delighted to have such a big name bring attention to the song, and the royalty checks didn’t hurt either.

The only one I know is the Huey Lewis song. I was 5-15 in the 80s. I thought fir a second I knew the Jennifer Rush original, but then I realized it was Celion Dion’s cover I knew. Looking it up, Rush’s version didn’t crack the top 40 or even 50 here, but Celine’s made it to number one. There’s also apparently a version by Laura Branigan that made it to #26.

I saw Huey Lewis and the News last month and they still have it.

Wasn’t that the documentary on Hollywood sexual harassment?

In the UK I’d imagine Frankie being the first that comes to mind as it was released first and was a big Christmas hit. Closely followed by Huey Lewis and Jennifer Rush a bit behind that.

Celine, because I saw this video all the time on VH-1 back in 1994. Yes, it was relevant to my teenage interests.

I voted Huey Lewis, but I was sitting here thinking "Didn’t Chicago have a song called “The Power of Love?” On looking it up, it was Peter Cetera (not all of Chicago) and it was “The Glory of Love”, so no.

Karate Kid Part II!

I’m with you. When I hear somebody say ‘the power of love’ my mind quickly fills in ‘a force from above’.

No, it was a porn flick. DUH! :smack:

That’s the first one that came to mind for me. And far better than the 3 in the OP in my opinion.

Voted for Frankie because I couldn’t remember how the Huey Lewis song goes.

It goes “that’s the power of love…”

Ok, having listened to all three, I recognise all of the songs but associate the title “The Power of Love” with Huey Lewis and the News.

Charley Pride.

Huey Lewis (mainly because of Back to the Future) BUT the Jennifer Rush and Frankie Goes to Hollywood songs were also popular here in Australia.

The Jennifer Rush single peaked at #1 and was the 23rd biggest single of 1985.
The Huey Lewis single also peaked at #1 and was the 24th biggest single of 1985.
The Frankie Goes to Hollywood single peaked at #4 and was the 58th biggest single of 1985.

When I read the title, I immediately heard the dulcet tones of Jennifer Rush and wondered whether there really was another song called The Power of Love. Then I opened the thread. Huey Lewis and the News. Of course. It might be a tad more famous :D. And Frankie Goes to Hollywood, I know that one, too.

I think that my mum was a fan of the Jennifer Rush song. That would explain my vote.

… 'Cause I am your laaaaaaady…

Seriously dude? A cover is when someone sings the same song. A blatant copy is when someone lifts the vocals off a track and add the same damned vocals with the same intonation, style and timbre so that you cannot tell them apart. Sure, a more well-known singer can do this and when they do, they should be ashamed of themselves.

Well, obviously. I mean, so long as the old boy is so much as barely breathing
