I voted for Huey Lewis. I couldn’t immediately remember which one of Celine’s songs fit the description, though of course I recognized it once the video started. Never heard Frankie’s song and as was mentioned, pretty much if you weren’t into them the only songs of theirs you’d be likely to know are *Relax *and Two Tribes.
As an aside, did the popular pronunciation of love as “lurve” come from mocking Celine? She doesn’t do it too much in this song but whenever someone says it that’s way I always think that where the joke must come from.
I doubt Todd Rundgren felt ashamed of Good Vibrations.
I doubt Celine Dion feels ashamed of The Power of Love. She should, though.
I like Todd Rundgren, but I never got the point of the first half of that album. Definitely not a fan of those types of covers. If I want to listen to “Good Vibrations,” done in the style of the Beach Boys, I’ll listen to the original. It cannot be improved upon in its original form, so why copy it? It’s just throwaway garbage to me.
Yes, seriously. And I’m sure Celine is extremely ashamed of singing it.
Todd’s point was that he wanted to pay homage to the songs that influenced him faithfully–along the same lines that classical music is performed by orchestras and symphonies. Thus the album’s name.
Well, yes, I understand the name. I just find it uninteresting. I’m sure Todd doesn’t care about my opinion, though.
The Jennifer Rush video link doesn’t work for me. Here’s another to a video of the same song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_zHQ6kFuQ0
Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s is the most beautiful, and speaking as an atheist, a particularly great music video.
Huey Lewis’s is the most fun, and Back to the Future is one of my top 5 movies. So they both rate higher for me.
However, whenever I hear the title, the one my brain goes to is always Jennifer Rush’s.
IIRC, Jennifer Rush isn’t a rock or pop artist…her background is opera.
I picked Jennifer Rush as when that was a hit I was working in a bar and part of my duties was polishing the bar and surrounds every morning. They always had the radio on and this song was on non-stop it seemed. Burnt into my brain.
Love the Frankie song though. One of my favourite xmas songs. It was released in the UK at xmas and was a xmas number one.
Frankie, Huey and Jennifer. All three songs were big hits in the days in Germany and are still played on some radio stations.
ETA: don’t know Celine Dion’s version and don’t want to, shudder (in fact I don’t want to hear ANY Celine Dion song for the rest of my life ever, it that’s possible).
