Admittedly, his performance was polished and professional. Maybe game show hosting is his true calling. The silver lining would be that he’s ineligible to be elected President.
Maybe Meredith Viera could use a gig.
ETA: The next nine episodes will be something to be endured, rather than enjoyed.
You were friends with Alek Trebek but didn’t realize it until you saw Dr Oz on the show?
As for the money going to his charity, that’s part of the arrangement with all of the guest hosts. “As a part of each guest host’s appearance, a donation will be made to a charity of their choice. The amount donated will equal the cumulative winnings of the contestants that compete during the weeks they serve as guest host.”
I didn’t care much for Dr. Oz’s first show. He kept the pace going, which I like, but I thought he was just a bit quick and curt. After one of the clues that no one got, he just blurted out the answer and told the contestant to select another clue. It took my brain a moment to process. Say what you want about filler like “we were looking for…”, but it does serve a purpose.
I’d probably get used to his style eventually, or he may slow down with more experience.
Sorry - I meant to write didn’t realize that Oz and Alex were friends until Oz said it on the show. So I had started to cut Oz a little slack because of the nice things he said about Alex. Thanks for pointing out the autocorrect error.
I was predisposed to thinking Oz was a poor choice to host because I think he’s a quack and I am not interested in supporting his run. Clearly I’m not alone.
Of course I understand the charity bit, but - perhaps after the last four years - hearing that money is going to someone’s OWN charity rang an instant alarm bell for me. It sounds like self-dealing.
I’d not be surprised to hear that Oz is about the same as any other new host would be, and as long as they don’t get in the way of play, would be fine.
I’m not a Nielsen HH so it won’t really matter if I watch or not, but I won’t be watching Oz.
The charity that Katie Couric mentioned during her time hosting, Stand Up To Cancer, was founded by her (and others) after her husband (and later her sister) died of the disease. As for the remaining guest hosts, presumably they’ve chosen charities they care about and know do good work. (In part, just by mentioning the name of the charity, they’re drawing attention to it, which might cause others to contribute, or seek it out for assistance.)
Uh huh. So care to say what those are? I’m not going to re-read 220 posts. I’ve only seen people complain here by saying “He’s a quack!” OK, why? What is the problem?
I wonder if Dr. Oz doesn’t serve the purpose of having someone who will be disliked by many avid Jeopardy! fans host before picking their permanent host. One of those, “Well, it’s not as bad as Dr. Oz, at least!” things.
I haven’t been following this thread for awhile. Any idea when they might make their choice? If my idea holds any water, it might be soonish.
We still have to have that poor down on his luck fellow, who’s looking to start his second act, maybe as a game show host, maybe a talk show, whatever, but he needs a start, because his first career was such a failure. I give you: Aaron Rodgers! I vote him for permanent replacement!
To lazy to find the reference (it is probably above somewhere), but I think they are doing all guest hosts this season and the new permanent host starts next season. Whether they’ve actually decided is another question (my guess is no, but they have a short lest which includes but is not exclusively the guest host list)
Didn’t read this whole thread to see if anyone else mentioned, in another Jeopardy thread I nominated Mike Rowe - he’s intelligent, articulate, personable. I think he’d be perfect. Watching Dr. Oz last night gave me the same feeling I got when I accidentally wiped my butt with sandpaper.
Also: I watched Oz’s show a little when it was new, and one thing I remember: He’d have audience members give him a very brief description of a problem they’re having, and he’d give them an instant diagnosis and something they can do about it. Never “you should see a specialist about this.” This is HIGHLY unethical for a doctor.
Yep. That left eyebrow of his is making me twitch. Oh well. I think he’s a perfectly fine Jeopardy! presenter but I sure wouldn’t want him as permanent host.
