As host he was okay, but bland, and I’m troubled by the allegations outlined in the tweet thread linked above. If there’s any substance to them, I think he should be canned as EP.
Note that the headline says he’s in advanced negotiations, but the article says Buzzy and others are still in consideration. This could be a leak from his camp to try and boost his chances with Sony brass.
I’m still rooting for Buzzy. He has a distinctive character and energy that most other guest hosts lacked. And since I never got to see Mayim, based on the positive responses from lots of folks, I’d be fine with her, too. It would nice to see her break through the game show glass ceiling. LeVar did not live up to expectations, and I still don’t see what people saw in Aaron Rodgers.
I’m expecting the official announcement on or about April 16, after the last ep of S.37 has aired.
I was surprised how much I like Mayim B as a host. (Never watched any programs, I mean TV shows, she was in). Plus having a woman host would be at least a small step into dragging this country up into the late twentieth century.
And how often was too often? He hosted 8,310 shows. I can imagine that he was snarky a few times in ways that might have rubbed some people the wrong way. But I don’t recall any particularly jerkish behavior on-camera. (Of course, I only watched a small fraction of those 8,000 shows.)
And like others here, I didn’t find his pronunciation of foreign words objectionable or think he was showing off. I’m no Parisien, but I took French for a few years in high school, and I’ve heard French Canadians speaking some incomprehensible language they claimed was French. I thought Trebek’s French was fine. He might have had a Quebecois accent, but I didn’t notice it.
I’m going to drop this hijack unilaterally, because trying to prove Trebeck acted like a jerk without having access to 8310 shows is a ridiculous request. And most examples would be subjective anyway. “Well, turning a contestant’s story into always being about himself really isn’t bad, you hater.”
Let’s just leave it at the time he laughed at the pet goat that died from eating concrete and agree to disagree.
I hope that is the reason for the leak (or “leak”) about Richards.
I don’t like the idea of Richards; the various lawsuits give me the impression of a man who uses bullying and intimidation as on-the-job tools. Not an association I care to have to ponder each time I tune in to Jeopardy!
possible they were giving out low ball offers and he was only one to say yes. And maybe some wanted to keep their old job and this new one and producers said this is your only job if you take it
I really hope it’s not Richards. At a time when the Andrew Cuomo and Activision Blizzard situations are showing a little accountability for sexual harassment and discrimination in the workplace, it would be terrible for Jeopardy to make a man who was twice-sued for such conduct the face of the program.
I think we’re gonna see a doubling of clue values.
The producers have been giving away double the money with the guests hosts, just with half of it going to charity. It’s been roughly the same length of time since it went from $1,000 to $2,000. I think $4,000 dollar questions is a way to put some oomph into the new host and new season.
To me, that’s the kind of thinking that hurt LeVar Burton. I read an article (probably linked here) where he talked about his time as host, and how each contestant had their own story. I think the host should be a referee more than a storyteller. Read the questions clearly, call on the contestants, rule them right or wrong quickly, add more information when it’s warranted, and keep things moving. The game has an established structure; trust it, and the stories will arise naturally.
