Who should host The Daily Show?

This (gift) Washington Post article about Roy Wood Jr’s performance at the Correspodent’s Dinner makes a good case why he should given the Daily Show. He has been one of my favorite guest hosts, so I’d be pleased to see him get it.

I’m wondering whether you’ve seen his turn at the Correspondent’s Dinner, and did it change your mind? It did mine. I would have told you he lacked the gravitas to pull of the role in times of trouble. I’m not concerned about that now.

Of all of them I like Leguizamo best. I wanted Leslie Jones to be the winner, and I think she would grow into the role nicely. But I put her in third, and Roy Wood as a close second to Leguizamo. Klepper also did well, I’d put him in fourth, if he promises to change his hair.

Wayans did a fine job overall, but I didn’t appreciate the vulgarity. I love Dulce, and she’d better stay on, but I just don’t think she’s ready. Same with Desi.

I strongly object to Franken as a candidate. I just don’t think he showed any energy at all. I found it dull and irritating, and I don’t think I watched any of his all the way through.

Sending in Jon Stewart during one of his episodes probably helped those ratings. Kind of unfair to the other guest hosts to have Stewart visit (though he didn’t have anything to do with it). Feels like a back door “coronation.

You wanted Jones to win, but you did not appreciate the vulgarity of Wayans?

Jones was the most vulgar person to ever grace the Daily Show.

Don’t get me wrong. She’s the funniest person I’ve ever seen on TDS. I’m just saying she got a potty mouth.

Granted. But there is a difference between her using the occasional curse word, and him just gratuitously mentioning that he likes a tickle up his bum. She stayed on topic, and showed her emotion about the topic at hand.

With the strike, I wonder how that changes things. Poor Dulce. Will they take next week off? It’s easier for a host who’s always there to do a show with no writers but a guest host? That’s really unfair

Rumors are flying that Hasan Minhaj is the pick.

I hope it isn’t true. He’s funny, but he also has a kind of “thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room” energy that gets old quickly.

Agreed. I enjoyed Patriot Act, his former show on Netflix, but I don’t think I could take four days a week of Hasan. I am personally hoping they stick with guest hosts permanently, or if not, choose someone who is actively working on the show now as the new host. Going this route would feel like kind of a slap in the face to them.

I mentioned somewhere upthread that I find him to be too frenetic and high energy for the role.

Jon Stewart will once again be hosting The Daily Show, though only on Mondays through the election. Article from Variety.

Cool.

I like how Stewart argues with people in different rhetorical avenues and how he coaxes people onto the show though they know they’ll feel flames there.

I’ve loved the other people involved with the show too, Noah and the other cast and production staff there too.

Talk about a bureaucratic compromise that will wind up pleasing nobody.

I just assumed that Stewart would only agree to once a week.

Yeah, could we NOT make TDS part of the “all old white guy” theme of this election season? The TDS correspondents have been doing great jobs hosting, individually and in teams. Keep doing that, producers, if you can’t make a damn decision.

That’s what they’re going to do the rest of the week. From The Hollywood Reporter story, “The new setup, a major coup for the show and for parent company Paramount, is set to begin Feb. 12. For the remainder of the week, the Comedy Central series will rely on a team of correspondents, which are likely to include Jordan Klepper, Desi Lydic, Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta and Dulcé Sloan.”

And realistically, had they managed to settle on someone, anyone, they would not have done this.

Pretty sure if Hasan Minhaj hadn’t gotten into the whole kerfuffle over embroidering his standup act with “emotional truths” then the self-described “racoon on Adderal” would be hosting right now.

That’s probably true.
