Who the HELL watches that SYFY crap?

Too hot to do anything productive, so I’m flipping around the TV to see what’s on. SYFY has a double-feature: Sharktopus Vs. Pteracuda followed by Sharktopus Vs. Whalewolf.

What the un-cut funk?

Besides the obvious spoilering of at least one of these turds (Sharktopus clearly wins at least one of them  ), who the hell is going to waste a whole afternoon watching this crap? Who, exactly, is the target audience for this stuff? I would guess the mentally handicapped, but that would be unfair to that group!

How does drivel like this even get made? I mean, come on! Whalewolf? I want the drugs these “film” makers were on when they came up this. To be fair, the Pteracuda was kind of cute. (This is NOT an admission I watched this)

I need a beer. And a nap. Or two.

The beer, not the nap. One of those is good enough.

I’d like to see that pussy Sharktopus tangle with BisonRayBat. He’d get his ass handed to him. Or what ever a Sharktopus has.

Where have you been? They’re been doing this stiff for years.

I think this goes on all week culmninating in the premiere of Sharknado: The 4th Awakens.

When the channel first came on it was all reruns of six million dolar man OG battlestar incredible hulk ect with ufo stuff like sightings and the like but when blair witch project came out and they had a mockumentary which started the whole “its real! (maybe or maybe not)” that’s what put them on the map …

heh dude for 15 years or more syfy has churned out one of those a week … and believe it or not they get pretty good ratings sometimes

tho they switch between horror and movies like that or natural disaster with the occasional mockbuster (American warships battle for la ect )…if fact I think its almost been a year now that syfy celebrated its 200th original movie …

I think it started when Roger corman had a movie/tv show deal with them in their early days and I think he helped set up their production so that’s sort of what they stick to … fast cheap and improbable
But I think there switching gears to tv series (they’ve tried before but their tv shows were as bad as their movies well until warehouse13 changed it al l)

Now if you think syfys bad check out the all horror sister channel “chiller” …

But most channels have a made for tv movie unit now … lifetime hallmark ect even bet and others that you wouldnt think of …

Stuff.

SciFi channel hooked me way back with MST3K. Now it’s just habit to have that channel as the background noise of my day.

Every once in awhile I like to watch a “made for/by SyFy” movie. (I DVR it, then watch it later zapping over the 4% or so of the time that is commercials). I am constantly amazed at the good quality of their special effects, even in those movies which have godawful scripts and acting. I can only surmise that good special effects must be dirt cheap these days.

Yes it is. You are watching it RIGHT NOW, aren’t you? AREN’T YOU? Don’t lie to us. We can tell. And yes, you should feel bad about yourself. :stuck_out_tongue:

Most of 'em are truly awful but there is the occasional ‘gem’ (using that term very loosely).

*Ghost Shark *was surprisingly fun and the Asylum version of The War of the Worlds, while cheap, is a reasonable take on the H.G. Wells novel and has one of the better takes on the Curate so far. The sequel is freaking terrible.

My husband LOOOOVVVEESSS SyFy. He watches The Hunters, Killjoys and The Expanse. He watched Falling Skies and, one I liked, Defiance.

I thought Sharknado was a hoot. Oh, and the movie about the Indian dinosaur curse. That was also great.

Hey, “Z Nation” is a lot of goofy fun.

Was that the one with the skeleton running around? Oops, giving myself away.

Falling Skies was on TNT, not SyFy.

I’ve seen them act. You weren’t wrong.

While the Sharknado and Sharktopus movies are full of obviously fake gore, they are also very funny which is why people watch them.

We’re watching a lot of their series right now too. I love Killjoys. We’re also watching their reboot of 12 Monkeys, which has been surprisingly good. Wynnona Earp is pretty good too, if you’re into demon-killing smart-mouthed chicks. Apparently I am.

Why they changed their name from SciFi is a mystery for the ages…

Hmm, maybe I should get my “Catdogtopus” script out of the box. I may need it soon.

IIRC it was because they were able to trademark SyFy but not a more generic term like SciFi, or some similar consideration.

heh I had to misfortune to watch the 4th sharkotpus movie … and the new hearld of fine killer animal cinema

ATOMIC SHARK

not going to bother with spoilers for this cat box left over but its a radioactive shark that has Godzilla like fire powers that has one weakness… it OVERHEATS if out of water too long

Which after the usual syfy bs relationship drama they toss in their flicks as sub plot the shark gets killed after several fancy plans that dont work when the heroine gets stuck in the water finds an atoll and gets the shark beached long enough for it to overheat in a atomic fireball … leaving her and her bf as the only survivors …

I give this a cheese level of a babybel … the shark looks stupid … the acting normal and most of the sets are an la county beach , and supposedly theres gonna be a new movie every night til sharknado (except for Friday cause that’s their series night )

Are you watching Dark Matter? I like it better than Killjoys. 12 Monkeys has been surprisingly good. The movie is one of my favorites, so I was skeptical about a series, but I’m enjoying it so far.

A heretofore unmentioned answer is: Enough people over a long enough period of time to be profitable.

It’s already been said that these movies are cheap as hell to make, and the more movies Syfy makes (200? really?) the bigger their content library, which means they can make the movie once and reap the commercial money for years to come.

Will they make the money back in it’s debut? Probably not. Will they make it back (and then some) after the 30th noon-time showing because of the aggregate number of commercials? Yup.
