Sorry, I’m at work and posted that super fast, but probably should have provided more info. There are a whole LOT of ifs in there.
If he keeps his nose clean is just one… if he builds up his political career and it’s in line with my political values, if he seems seasoned and competent, blah, blah, blah. And I obviously couldn’t say he’d be our second black president, he might be our 5th, or never at all. And I’m most definitely not saying he’d get my vote *just *because of his color. He just happens to be a politician that happens to be black that I admire and think has a bright future and a lot of potential.
I first became aware of him through the documentary Street Fight a few years ago, and, being from NJ, have kept my eye on him and his impact on the city of Newark ever since.
He is exactly the type of candidate with possibility. There are very few blacks now in a position to make a serious run. Blacks in Congress. One Senator who won’t be around long enough to carve “United States Senate 2009-11” on his tombstone, and a bunch of Representatives which house doesn’t have much luck running for President. Black governors. Patrick? Maybe.
I think the next black President is working his way up the ladder even as I type, and your nomination is as good as any.
I always thought that Kurt Schmoke, currently the Dean of Howard University Law School and former Mayor of Baltimore, would be the first black president.
I also am really impressed by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson.
I agree that Cory Booker seems like he will go far in politics.
