whoes singing 'imagine?'

I’m listening on the radio to the ‘America. Tribute to the heroes’ or whatever its called. Who is singing 'Imagine?" It sounds like Neil Young, but I’m not sure.
peace,

By God, I am watching it on TV right now.

Yup, it’s Neil.

Who is a Canadian, BTW.

Thank you, Canada

thank you, Zipper

Go to http://www.tributetoheroes.org and watch the webcast, while yr at it…um, but I might so make a sandwhich while Fred Durst sings Pink Floyd (backed by strings?!)…I love America and all, but this is just…saving it for the BBQ pit…

I hope to hell it wasn’t Durst who changed the lyrics.
peace,
JB

Is there anywhere I can find a schedule or list of the performers? The official website doesn’t seem to have any identifying info…I’ve only been watching for a little while, and I’ve known them all so far, but someone is bound to come on who I’m gonna go “Who the hell is THAT?” Would be nice to be able to answer the question.

P.S. I turned it down as soon as I realized it was Fred Durst singing “Wish You Were Here.” I was all ready to start crying, then went, “EEEWWWW!!!”

I’ve known them all but the woman who sang the gospelish tune, with Paul Shaffer on keyboards–who was that?

At first glance the title of this thread appeared to be Whores Singing "Imagine"

I think it was Faith Hill.

That was my guess too, but I’m not sure.

Well, at least it was heartfelt, I guess.

You have a dirty, dirty mind.

[sub]I thought it was “whores” too. Imagine my disappointment.[/sub]

Me too, Torgo. Me too…I also saw “Designated Hitler” a couple days ago, as opposed to “Designated Hitter”. :o

The lyrics for “Wish You Were Here” were changed for the telethon? How, praytell?

I mean, before I have to go scrambling for the Betacam copies in the edit bays?

The second verse of WYWH:

“And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?”

was completely changed to lyrics I can no longer recall, but the gist of which was that it’s time for a change and peace and all that stuff… I found it interesting to hear one of the lesser-talented lyricists of the 70s (Roger Waters) interpreted by on of the lesser-talented lyricists of the 00’s (“Break Stuff,” anyone?) during a benefit for one of the greatest disasters of recent American history. Where’s Maya Angelou now? Perhaps the generation growing up in the shadow of this attack/war will produce our next great poets…

Alrighty, then…I expect we’ll find this thread tossed into the Cafe soon enough…

I thought Durst actually sounded ok singing Floyd, but I thought he chose the wrong song (he wouldn’t of had to change the words to “On the Turning Away” to make it more relevant).

On the whole, I couldn’t believe how well the telethon worked. Most of the musical choices were great, and the total sense of togetherness was inspiring. I mean, you’ve got Neil Young, King of the Protest Song, writer of songs like “Ohio” and “Keep On Rocking in the Free World”, toning down the hippy-ness and singing “Imagine”. You’ve got Billy Joel chipping in “New York State of Mind”. Willy freakin Nelson (he’s still ALIVE?) ending with “America the Beautiful”. Very touching. Heck, I even got a bit misty-eyed at Simone and Sipowitz, together again, talking up the NYPD.

But there were a couple…For one, and I realize that this is going to make me sound a bit bad, but how does a French-Canadian songstress get to be the one to sing “God Bless America”? “Land that I love”? “My home sweet home”? Um, no. I <shudder> would have rather had Briteny or Christina or even Mariah sing it, and let Celine sing one of her own songs.

The only other disappointment of the night was that I was hoping that once Paul Simon got to the chorus, the camera would pan back and show a certain curly-haired redhead singing harmony with him. If it was ever going to happen, what could possibly be a better opportunity?

And I really didn’t need to hear Bon Jovi and Sambura doing
“Living on a Prayer” accustic again. But at least he was in good voice.

I got instantly bored with the show when it started with Springsteen and then Jewel (I hate Springsteen and Jewel), I turned the channel and ended up watching “Invasion of the Bodysnatchers.” But then I heard about the Neil Young segment and I’m sorry I missed that. Young did a bitter antiwar statement with his tour right around the time of Desert Storm, he hadn’t been that intense in many years. So now I’m kind of wondering how his performance went on the telethon.

Since this is asked and answered (and we shoulda oughta moved it to Cafe Society anyway), I’ll just close it.
