No, I’m sure they will. They are tethered to the table. When I bought my 5s a couple months ago I wanted to make sure it would fit where I always keep it in my bag and they said it was fine for me to test if it fit.
I have no desire whatsoever to upgrade to a larger phone. The 5s fits nicely in my pocket, anything bigger and it will feel like it would snap in half whenever I sit down. I always see girls with these giant phones sticking halfway out of their small pockets and think to myself how dumb and dangerous that is.
I have never had a smart phone, but my boss is encouraging me to retire my flip-phone and go smart. sigh
I have an iPad that I use extensively, so going with the iPhoneis a no-brainer, but I have been holding off, waiting for this release. I’ll probably go with the 5.5-inch version.
One problem is they tether the display models by the charger cable and one of the things I want to see is how the 6 Plus will fit sideways in my pocket. I tried the cardboard mockup, and it fits sideaways in the khakis I wear to work but I suspect sitting with it that way will be difficult.
I printed the Ars templates, and was surprised at the size of the Plus, it looked big, ungainly, and the overall balance and proportions seem a bit off or unbalanced, it looks like it was zapped by an “Embiggen-inator” (sponsored by Doofenschmirtz Evil Inc.)
The plus is NOT watch pocket freindly, but does fit nicely in the regular front pockets of my jeans, put it in an Otterbox to protect it from drops/scratches and it should be good to go
The regular 6 looks far more balanced, and is watch pocket freindly, with space for an Otterbox, it just loses a little screen real estate
I’ll wait until the first bug fix/update before deciding, let the early adopters debug it first, maybe even wait for the inevitable 6s midline update
I’ve had a Note since they first came out, and know a few other people that have gotten them. It doesn’t take long before the size becomes the “new normal”, and it’s less of an issue than you’d think. Sub-5" phones now are impossibly small to me.
This is almost exactly my deal, as well. I have a 5 that I got right around launch that still works like a charm. Also, I got the battery changed out for free by Apple about three weeks ago due to an early iphone 5 model battery recall so the main part of the phone that tends to start to suck after a couple of years is brand new on my phone. My plan is to hold out until the 6S or whatever comes next year. The 6 Plus just looks too big for me. I have to fit this thing in my pocket, for crying out loud. I don’t wear parachute pants!
My LG slidey-keyboard thingy phone is still going strong (though the slidey keyboard thingy doesn’t get much use since we don’t have texting on our plan). It lets me make phone calls that sometimes go through, and it’s super for checking the time now and again, when I’ve remembered to charge it. It even remembers all my phone numbers for me!
Seriously, though, I live in an area with horrible coverage. There’s only one company with signal that even reaches my house, and I can’t connect to it unless I’m in the driveway. If and when I graduate with my PhD and get an actual job, my wife and I might celebrate then by getting smart phones and joining this millennium. In a way, I’m actually quite reluctant to do that. Never having had one, I don’t miss it. Once I get one, I’ll never be able to do without it again.
This is actually one of the smart things that Apple does, and I’m amazed other electronics retailers don’t follow suit. The whole point of Apple products is that they’re exceptionally well-designed, and a pleasure to handle. Is that reason enough to buy them? Your call, but that’s a big part of the pitch.
So, the Apple stores do everything they can to encourage people to handle the products as normally as possible. There are lots of demo units, and they’re secured only by thing tethers. Do people drop and break the things sometimes? Oh, probably. But people also buy them.
Other electronics retailers tend to take a much more cautious approach - very large and heavy security widgets on the display units, or the units are simply attached to the table or counter. Which is crazy, because the customers can’t handle the phone or tablet, and see “oh, wow, this is really light.”
Nah. I always skip at least one generation. I went 3G->4->5S.
The only thing that might make me get one is if I need a test device. I write game sin my spare time but I am getting a bit disillusioned by the mobile market and raise-to-the-bottom. I’m thinking of refocusing towards the desktop.
I got to play with the Precious briefly yesterday (the 6 plus). I wanted to see if it would fit in my pocket, because that was an important consideration. I’m happy to report that it did! And it is a sexy thing–slim, with rounded edges and a beautiful clear screen. I didn’t want to give it back! The other thing I liked about it is that it seemed a bit thinner than the big Androids (don’t know if it really was–I haven’t interacted with one). It felt good in my hand and when I held it up to my face to simulate making a call. I can’t wait to get my own!
Full disclosure: I’m female but I refuse to wear pants with “girl” pockets. So my jeans pockets are full-sized. I don’t know how it will fit in normal girl-sized pockets. But it should fit in boy-sized pockets just fine.
I suspect I’ll end up getting the 6, since my 4s is getting a bit long in the tooth. I think what the wikipedia page is telling me is that a North American phone from any major carrier will work with any major carrier (as long as its unlocked.) IE, the phone itself supports GSM and CDMA both just fine. Is that the case? I’ll probably buy from T-Mobile, but I wouldn’t want to locked out of switching to Verizon at some future point (on the other hand, fuck Sprint.)
Looks like Verizon is going to be offering a $200 credit for your old iphone 4 or 5 is you re-up another 2 years with them. That would make the 6 free or the 6+ only $99.
I was pretty much assuming I’d get one and just trying to figure out whether to get the 6 or the 6+, but now I’m thinking my iPhone 5 is still pretty nice (helps that Apple has decided to do a free battery replacement!) so why not wait a year and save some money.
I made cardboard cutouts and the 6+ is indeed huge. I was leaning towards getting the 6+ because of the extra screen real estate and the better battery life, but then I read that the software renders to a 2208x1242 buffer which is then scaled to the 1920x1080 screen, which I find rather disgusting.
The 6 is still a nice improvement in screen size while being not too unwieldy, but I worry about battery life. The numbers are pretty much the same as for the 5/5S, and the 5 never had great battery life even before its battery started dying on me at 50%.
I really like the idea of paying with NFC, but I don’t like the way Apple is involving itself in the process and the utter lack of information on how this is going to work out in Europe. I also like the health tracking stuff.
My carrier doesn’t support LTE on the iPhone 5 while the newer models do, but I was never going to give up my 10 euro/month plan with “unlimited” data that’s 3G-only anyway. 32 GB is getting a bit cramped but I can probably manage a bit longer.
If I wait a year then the S models will be more mature, maybe a bit lighter, there will be more accessories.
And I could actually get an iPad (big screen) and an Apple Watch (health monitoring) for the price of a new iPhone.
Well, free + sales tax on the original price (at least in CA you do). That can be a surprise for people expecting to just swap out their phone for nothing out-of-pocket.
My husband and I have a 4s and have been waiting for the 6 so will be ordering them Friday. We probably will go to the local Apple store to touch the Plus and decide but right now I lean towards the 6.
I still hold the phone against my ear during phone calls, and I think the 6 Plus would be uncomfortable for long calls, so I’m leaning towards getting the 6.
