Bernie was treated fairly.
-
Hillary would be winning regardless of any way you try to rearrange the results.
-
You won’t accept this
What a completely stupid and idiotic statement. Back then the answer was neither. And right now the answer is still neither.
The Dem convention will be the violent one. Will be an interesting summer.
And even that all depends on what he says, or doesn’t say, to them first.
All violence, all threats of violence, and all resentment that could lead to violence come from Sanders supporters.
Back to the question at hand…
Which convention will be more violent? I say, they’ll both be equally violent - or, probably more accurately, non-violent.
Question: how many “Bernie Bros” are convention delegates? I have a feeling at least one is going to ask for a delegate-by-delegate roll call if Sanders doesn’t get all of the superdelegates in his state, if for no other reason than to get delegate votes on the record “so we know whom to vote out of office in November.” If the party decides to come up with a rule along the lines of, “For the protection of the delegates and the sanctity of the secret ballot, the individual delegate votes for President will not be made public,” then there might be fireworks.
I’m guessing the GOP convention will be more violent. There will be a fuck of a lot more lefties protesting Trump than Trump supporters protesting Hillary.

Shodan

This would only be true if one were to ignore the past 50 or so years of political violence in the U.S.
Slee
Look, there’s no need to choose! Let both parties have violent conventions! Inside the hall and outside! Let’s make this a year to remember!
Unless Sanders lets the inmates out of his asylum again, and they somehow get bus fare to Philadelphia. Then we’ll have a problem.
I think the OP was asking about actual U.S. political parties. Not some right wing unicorn called “The Democrat party.”
To answer the OP, however, I think “neither” is the correct answer. Both conventions should go pretty smoothly.
I love how all the Republicans/“Independents”(=“Republicans who don’t want to cop to the label anymore”) are the ones salivating at violence in Philadelphia. Go away, Concern Trolls…
Dunno. Will the Republican convention really support the NRA and allow both open and concealed carry? If yes, then call me crazy but I’d expect the Republican convention to take the upper hand.
To return to the OP - and discontinue the hijack (hint hint) - there will be far more guns at the GOP convention along with an electorate that is voting out of anger. The odds of any real violence are greater at the GOP convention.
AIUI the Secret Service has overridden that sentiment. *Outside *the hall, maybe.
But not at each other. The incoherently angry *won *that nomination.

IME, extremists generally, and lefty extremists in particular, have a tendency to want to eat their own. It’s some combination of several factors: belief about who it is most effective to target; the sort of psychology that drives extremists to hate apostates more than non-believers; and the tendency toward holier-than-thou posturing among people whose identity is closely tied up with their political beliefs (posturing that is more effective if the target of your ire is adjacent to you and members of your social circle on the political spectrum).
So I expect that there might be bigger protests of Trump because lots of relatively mainstream people are interested in expressing opposition to him. But I predict that fewer of them will be the kind of people who engage in conduct likely to escalate things beyond orderly protest.
Of course, a big factor potentially overriding the composition of the protests is the nature of the police response. With the conventions, however, the secret service is heavily involved in the security planning. So I suspect that we’ll see pretty similar police strategy and tactics, which means much will come down to how well-trained and well-behaved the cops are. I think Philly might have a slight advantage in both training and the geography of where the protests will happen.

Two points:
-
The DSS can forbid them all they want. I still think the smart money is on guns being inside the Hall. It’s too key a part of the GOP platform to not have a bunch of people make the effort.
-
Anger like that isn’t satisfied that easily. It won’t go away just because Trump got the nomination. There’s still a lot of resentment bubbling under the surface just waiting for its chance to erupt.
I’d be surprised if a delegate would take on the Secret Service like that. And won’t they have metal detectors?
Smart money: cite? No snark intended: I haven’t come across this view. Googling, I see that the pro-gun petition was sponsored by a liberal Democrat: “I’m 100 percent sincere in my conviction that guns should be allowed at the GOP convention. [It would be a reflection of] the policies they sought to impose around the nation.”
Re: the OP. Violence or nonviolence could occur at either convention. Odds are higher of within-arena violence in Cleveland, though since the convention is uncontested it’s difficult to see spot the motive. Highest odds for outside convention violence are also in Cleveland, though the perps would be leftish rage furbies.
There were metal detectors at their last convention, so it’s pretty much certain there will be this time, too.
Strangely enough, change the references from “left” to “right” and you have an exact description of what has happened to the Republican Party over the last few decades.
Right. That’s why I said I thought this was true of extremists in general.
