Who's watching The Sing-Off?

Judges are Ben Folds, Sara Bareilles, and Shawn (Boyz II Men) Stockman.

This is the first I’ve seen of it. Any fans on the Dope?

This is actually season 3, and my wife and I have been fans since the start. I don’t think it gets the critical and viewer support that other singing/talent competitions get though.

I’m watching season 2 here in Peru. Nice to watch and far less gimmicky than all other singing shows. Of course, Nicole Sherzinger’s neing there also helps a lot.
Nice show.

I missed the Nicole Scherzinger seasons. Tonight Sara Bareilles (who is new to the panel) embarrassed herself by referring to an all-male act’s “package,” and then hanging a lantern on that. Was Nicole better at this?

Better? Not sure, but I won’t miss her. She said a few questionable things herself. Once in a while she surprised me by making a thoughtful comment based in reality, but that was the exception rather than the rule.

I’m watching. I like the Sing Off and the Voice for the same reason - the people on the show on day one are all talented enough to be on the show. No listening to crappy performers week after week like Idol.

Darn, I was watching SyFy. I’m going to be torn. I watched the previous seasons, I do not remember the Pussycat Doll saying anything that wasn’t what Ben or the Boy2Man hadn’t already said.

Ben Folds seemed the best of the judges. Sara Bareilles seemed to just sort of “wow, neat” a lot, some of which was that it was her first night & she seemed excited just to be there.

I guess I’ll give it another chance. I’m not really feeling a lot of enthusiasm for goofy ballroom dance.

I missed the second hour but really enjoyed the first, especially Afro Blue and Delilah. I can see them going to the finals. The Wisconsin family were cute and enthusiastic but not on the same level. The Yellowjackets were kind of so-so to me.

Agree with the Sara’s “wow, neat!” attitude but hopefully she’ll be better next week. Although in my mind nothing can top Nicole’s reference to Shawn’s “musical orgasm” from last season.

Maybe I should take this to the Pit, but I really didn’t like this show at all.

I’m only 37, but my dad has listened doo wop music on the stereo since I was a little kid. I love doo wop. I love the interweaving of the harmonies and bass line with the melody into these interesting chords that you don’t normally hear in other forms of music. I’m not a huge fan of barbershop, but I like it for much the same reason.

I explained this to a friend a while ago and they told me I should watch The Sing-Off since it is all doo wop type of singing. So I’ve been eagerly awaiting this show.

I HATE beat-boxing. Hate it, hate it, Hate It, HATE IT!

It’s totally cheating. It’s not singing. It sounds fake. It’s very distracting. And it’s not singing!

I realize this is not a doo wop or barbershop competition, but it is an a capella competition and everyone should be singing. Everyone else on stage is singing beautiful harmonies except for one idiot who does his best to sound like drum machine. I’d rather just hear a drum machine. One group even gave their… percussionist(?) a 5 second solo. Gah!

The previews show one group proclaiming their sound to be more “electronic” and Ben Folds saying that one group has the sound of the future.

At least there was a group of old guys proclaiming that doo wop is not dead. I think I will tune into the show one more time to check them out.

Meh. If I wanted to hear doo wop I’d turn on PBS during fundraising week.

Glad the guys from Branson were sent packing for this very reason. They were never going to do anything original or inventive.

Well, we now know the answer to the OP. Damn few of us are watching.

Only saw the last hour of this week’s show. Nothing really stood out for me.

First hour was pretty good I thought.

The promos for next week’s show bits of performance. It looks like they taped a bunch of episodes at once in the summer. Interesting.

Partially agree there. I attend a lot of acapella shows and the beat box when kept as a backround can be a nice support. I was at one festival where they brought all of the beatbox guys from 4-5 groups on for a beatbox only … don’t know what to call it. :smack:

I watched the first season and was so annoyed with how often they told the audience that acapella meant there was no instruments that I’ve skipped it since.

This year they can’t stop telling us how acapella music is sweeping the nation. I swear, Nick Lachey tells us so three times an episode.

How did SONOS do? I didn’t watch, but apparently my cousin’s cousin (or some such) is part of them.

I’m watching, but I’m on a one-to-two week delay because we watch it as a group with lots of friends together, and we have a rotation of popular shows that we all watch.

So far I’ve seen the first episode of the third season.

I adore Ben Folds - he’s so calm, and he always has GOOD notes. Actual technical details, specific information, and he’s usually quite complimentary, even if the group isn’t very solid. The one exception was his scathing comment about soullessness to that set of dudes who sang for old people every night.

I think Sara is cute and has potential. We’ll have to see how she settles in.

Shawn Stockman is nice, and he usually makes good comments. I don’t mind him really one way or the other.

Nick can die in a fire, and I am SO GLAD that Stupidface Sherzinger is no longer a judge. After Ben caught her blatantly stealing his notes and then getting them wrong on several occasions, and the season’s-long Oh God I’m On A Diet So Everything Great Is Compared To Food kick, and the smarmy “I’m from X TOO!!1!one1!” beaming smiles and fakey different “home-girl” accents coming and going depending on where the current group is from - GAH! Cute only covers so much dumb, and her ratio was way off.

I’ll also set myself apart from the do-wopp lovers and say that beatboxers are one of my favorite acapella performers to watch. I would love to see a box-off on the show, or a group where the bb takes a bit more precedence.

I have nothing but awe for people who can make their voices/breath sound like various percussion instruments. I’m especially impressed by the ones who also have a good singing voice as well, and switch back and forth between the two modes during performances.

I do think Sara Bareilles was much better in the second episode. I think it just took her a little while to get past, Wow I’m so excited to be here!

I suspect if I’d been watching the Scherzinger eps I would have given up, if Lasciel is to be believed.

So far I’ve* really* liked two of the four acts voted off. I’m not sure what that means.

Sonos was OK, DooWahDiddy. They survived their first heat.

I’m watching, too, and have to second or third the idea that Sara Bareilles is a much better judge than Nicole from last year. She was awful.

So true.
