Why am I crying over School House Rock's "Figure Eight"

While surfing around You-Tube I came across Schoolhouse Rock and the the very first one was Figure Eight. I don’t no why but tears came to my eyes, it’s so silly but there you go. I have watched some of the others but none got to me like F8.

It has that effect on just about everyone. I think it’s the minor key, plus the childlike tone of the singer’s voice, plus the setting – snowbound schoolhouse, a time when life was so simple, all you had to worry about was your times tables – and the ending, with the infinity symbol.

And now I have something in MY eye. Thanks a lot.

Yeah, School House Rock. What fond memories…Interplanet Janet, Zero’s My Hero, Super Celsius, Conjunction Junction, I could go on and on.

“As you body grows bigger your mind grows flowers. It’s great to learn, cause knowledge is power!”

“It’s School House Rocky, a chip off the block of your favorite school house, School House Rock!”

ETA No I don’t own the DVD. I’m just using childhood memories.

It’s such a plaintive, minor-key song. It also makes me feel sad, but in a strangely good way.

Maybe you need to watch one of the more upbeat ones like Interjections or Lolly Lolly Lolly Get Your Adverbs Here.

Because Blossom Dearie was a freaking vocal genius, for one. I cried when she died last year.

Drat. Ninja’d by jayjay.

*A man and a woman had a little baby.
Yes, they did.
They had three in the family.
That’s a magic number. *

I think Rilchiam and Maserschmidt nailed it. I just wanted to mention that I get a little emotional over Mr. Morton.

Mr. Morton was lo-onely.
Mr. Morton was.

There is a great cover by Skee-Lo of the “Tale of Mr Morton”.

Yes, off the Schoolhouse Rock! Rocks tribute album. I’m also very fond of Ween’s version of “The Shot Heard Round The World” off of it.

Hell yeah, “Interjections”. My favorite one. Thanks for the link Little Nemo.

This version of Three is a Magic Number with the late Shannon Hoon singing with his band Blind Melon struck home a little bit conjuncting with the recent deaths of musicians Vic Chesnutt, Mark Linkous, and Peter Steele, respectively.

While I get nostalgic for all of them, my absolute favorite is Conjunction Junction. I sang the chorus once for a class and for a few brief seconds was actually cool.

One of my favorites of the Schoolhouse Rock series. Rza used a part of it in one of Wu Tangs songs and it was haunting and so pretty at the same time. He used the bit about thinking twice when skating on thin ice. Added a very sinister feel to the song.

Now that I think of it, Wu Tang used other Schoolhouse Rock songs, including another favorite of mine, Verb!

Hmm. And one of my favorite songs by De La Soul used Three is the Magic Number. Wow. A lot of heavy…sampling going on in hip hop with that series.

I’ll be the lone voice of irreverence and say that the thing Figure Eight most made me feel was fear…of those creepy weird nosed characters.

I liked Figure Eight, but my favorite of all of them was I’m Just a Bill.

ETA: And the one that taught me how to sing the preamble to the US Constitution. “We the people…”

“Figure Eight” is my least favorite of all the multiplication songs. The whole “8x1 is 4x2, 4x4 is 8x2” interlude bit does nothing but confuse kids. You’re stuck there trying to work out why she’s pointing that out by the time the mneumonic portion comes around.

My seven year old loves that one because she likes to listen to girls sing. But her favorite is probably Interplanet Janet.

I had to sit her down and explain that, “Pluto, little, Pluto” is so little it is no longer a planet.

I think she still doesn’t believe me on that one.

I love School House Rock.

My little girl is in first grade and knows all her times tables up to 12. She then figured out three digit multiplication after I showed her how over spring break.

I’m so proud of her.

School House Rock really does rock.

Hi, Everyone. Newbie here. I was wondering if anyone knows why you can’t find “Super Celsius” anywhere?? That was one of my favorites but when trying to find a video or soundtrack of it, it’s almost like it never existed.

Methyl Ethyl Death mentioned Super Celsius, so I don’t think I’m crazy.

Can anyone help??

Thank you,

FuzzyBunny
