Because Tim Kaine is perfectly capable of taking over?
I don’t get this from the perspective of the Clinton haters. If you hate her, and she dies in office, you win, you’ll have someone more trustworthy in office. What’s not to like? Meanwhile, Trump is equally old, so it becomes a matter of you caring if Kaine or Pence takes over. Harping about Clinton’s health means nothing when you’re not actually concerned for her, you’d want her health to fail
I was a bit young to participate but I remember that during both of Reagan’s campaigns his age was a big factor. It was brought up constantly. Not so much this time since both candidates are about the same age. I swear Reagan seemed so much older. It can’t be because I’m old now.
It was probably a bigger issue because Reagan was significantly older than his opponents. Carter was thirteen years younger and Mondale was seventeen years younger.
If somebody like Cruz or Walker had gotten the Republican nomination, I’m sure Clinton’s age and health would have been major issues before now. But up until now, both Clinton and Trump realized it was an issue with too much potential to blow back on them. The fact that Trump’s trying it now is probably a sign he’s getting desperate.
For us to believe that Trump is “getting desperate”, we have to first believe that he can realize that he isn’t winning. Granted, that should be as obvious as tits on a duck.
B.T. (Before Trump) it would be unseemly to more than elude to something personal like that. But even before 24 news there were surrogates working the press. Trump is now pushing it because it’s in his head and that means it has to come out.
Excepting that it was alluded to and more in Reagan’s campaign … and when Dole and McCain each ran when they were over 70. Remember the question to Bill Clinton about boxers or briefs and how the punchline became that Dole’s answer would’ve been “Depends …”
Clinton is younger than Trump but a) not by so much, and b) there are much more dramatic contrasts to focus on.
The issue cannot become whether or not a 70 year old man with poor health habits and a family history of dementia will stay mentally competent for the next four or more years when it is apaent that he isn’t now.
Neurologically children rapidly begin developing into adults around the age of 10. There is a similar neurological change at 70 … some people become “wise elders”. Trump is more likely to become an Elder than Clinton … she’s showing signs that she’ll turn into a “scheming old bat”.
I assume this is based on Trump’s birtherism, or maybe his other evidence-free conspiracy mongering? Or is it his assertion that a judge can’t do his job because of his Mexican heritage? Maybe it’s his made up story about thousands of Muslims in New Jersey cheering after 9/11?
Um, care to provide some sources explaining the rapid neurologic development that occurs at 70?
IOW what-the-fuck-are-you-talking-about?
The potential rapid change that occurs after 70 is the potential for cognitive decline. The neurological changes associated with normal aging are reviewed here. By every identified risk factor Trump is at greater risk for age-related cognitive decline, inclusive of but not restricted to dementia, than is Clinton, by several-fold. But even he is not at great risk of being much more impaired than is his baseline.
One of the flips of this cycle is that Clinton’s age (68) was expected to be an issue before the cycle began and it would have been if she was running against say a Rubio or even a Jeb Bush or even if O’Malley had gained some traction in the primaries. But running against a 74 year old (to turn 75 in 10 days) man in the primary and a 70 year old man in the general … she’s been the relative youngster!
Trump’s father had severe late-onset Alzheimer’s by his mid-60s, and died in deep dementia. Alzheimer’s has a strong genetic predisposition. Not a few experts are reading the same diagnosis into Trump’s behavior. So you might want to check another Alt-Right channel.
The people who become wise elders are the ones who were previously wise middle-aged adults, and usually wise young adults before that. If you ain’t wise by 70, you’re never going to be wise.
