FWIW, West Africa (which incidentally is nowhere near any of the countries you listed) is notorious for being a coffee wasteland, dooming residents to endless cups of Nigerian instant coffee knock off “NiceCafe” (Now with more sawdust!) served with glops of sweetened condensed milk. Even in coffee growing areas, the good stuff is send abroad for hard foreign currency, and people are left to pay up the nose for pricey good imported through the gnarled and horribly inefficient trade networks, cheap Chinese or Nigerian junk, or the subpar outputs of various state enterprises. It’s one of the great ironies of the developing word- even in areas with abundant resources, people often have no access to them due to lack of money and broken distribution systems.
Holy crap. I had NesCafe instant coffee once, and decided that I could never possibly be that desperate for caffeine. I’m having trouble imagining an inferior knockoff version, much less having that be my only coffee option.
