I don’t normally post in the Pit, but I thought I ought to weigh in here, since I was actually at the rally mentioned in the e-mail.
First of all, it wasn’t a completely inaccessible location. The airport is about 20 minutes by car outside of Bozeman. There were cars all over the place, and even without a car, I was able to make it there by public transportation and foot (though I seemed to have been the only one to go out on the public bus).
Second, while Montana beef is certainly excellent (better than I’ve had anywhere else in the country), Obama wasn’t here long enough to have any sort of banquet, surf or turf. He might have had a chance to grab a quick sandwich backstage before he came out to the meeting, but I’m guessing that he just ate on the helicopter before or after.
Third, a fellow from the Tea Party group did claim to have a permit for the area the Obama supporters were in, but didn’t have any evidence for it at the time. I haven’t yet found out whether they actually did or not.
Fourth, the only person who seemed to be spoiling for a fight was the driver of a large truck bearing Tea Party banners, who drove towards the supporters a few times (but stopped short of running anyone over). Other than that, the pro and anti groups mingled pretty much peacefully. The pro-Obama organizers with megaphones were periodically reminding folks that we didn’t want violence, and people seemed to listen.
Fifth, there was one busload of Obama supporters who came in, I don’t know from where, but the folks on that bus couldn’t have been more than a tenth of the people who were out there in support of Obama. Most of the people I talked to were from Bozeman. Many of the signs were professionally made, but were distributed by the organizers to whomever would hold one: The origin of the signs says nothing about the origin of the people carrying them. There were also a fair number of homemade signs.
Sixth, yes, many of the pro-Obama demonstrators were under 30, but that should hardly be surprising, considering that Bozeman is a college town.
Seventh, I didn’t see anyone wearing a shirt or carrying a sign that had anything to do with abortion or Planned Parenthood. Maybe they were there, but I sure didn’t see them.
Eighth, of course it was organized by the White House. I knew about the event because of an e-mail I received from BarackObama.com. The fact that a President is able to motivate the people and get things done is suddenly somehow reminiscent of the USSR?
