Fortunately, the courts did and struck them down with the explicit statement that they were discriminatory. (TX, NC, PA)
Also fortunately, a majority of the country disagrees with them. Yet even many of those on the right manage to rationalize abortion in rape cases or where the life of the mother is in jeopardy. And ensuring one’s own religious freedom is not an excuse for curtailing the freedoms of others.
Which has been shown to be a manufactured problem and as such needs no such solution. I suggest you read more about it.
Actually, they don’t. In the end, it’s been the courts that have spoken.
As for your point in another post, you say libertarian ideals align more strongly with those of Republicans; that appears to have been the popular mythology. But if I had to give some proportion as to my beliefs, I’d say something along the lines of one part conservative, two parts liberal, and three parts libertarian. Where would I fit in your theoretical political spectrum? I can guarantee you it isn’t conservative or Republican.
Yeah, and the Confederacy was all about protecting the freedom to own other people. Pretty much anything can be reframed as “protecting freedom” if you wrench hard enough on the definition of “freedom.”
I’m not saying all conservatives feel this way, but that anyone back in the late 60s early 70s who touted “America Love It or Leave it” was conservative. Yes, every single one of them. I was one of those goddamn hippies who were trying to ruin America, so I did hear from quite a few of them.
But it turns out this attitude is still present today. A woman who belongs to a group I’m a member of got a letter, addressed to her but unsigned, that read in total:
U.S.A.
Love it or Leave it
President Donald Trump
Our President
Let’s Make America Great Again
There can be no doubt that the person who sent this is conservative.
