Have posted about Romani stuff (which led to being asked questions), but don’t recall starting an ‘ask the…’ thread.
Without making any value judgments, are ZPG Zealot’s views on parenting/adoption outside the Roma/Romani mainstream? Would she be regarded as strange or just a little more extreme than most?
I guess I’m asking what the Romani view of adoption is.
I’d say the typical Romani attitude to adoption is very negative and that’s largely based upon fear. Systematic removal of Romani children from their parents is something that’s been done on a large scale, much like the more well known removal of children from indigenous peoples in North America and Australia. Not just an historic thing. If memory serves, some politician from an Eastern or Central European country was proposing the idea within the last five years or so.
My own view is that children who have parents unable to care for them would ideally be raised by other members of the family or others of the same community (be that based upon ethnicity, culture, religion, whatever). I don’t think that’s an idea that’s out there and seem to recall that it’s a standard practice with UK social workers. It’s not exactly uncommon for children to be raised by aunts, uncles, grandparents or older siblings. That’s what I think is an ideal, mind, and life isn’t always ideal. Given the choice between a kid rotting in a care home until they’re 18 or being adopted by people who will love them, adopt away.
While a culture can define how one feels about a particular subject, it’s entirely down to the individual how they choose to express themselves. I dislike physical contact unless I initiate it but, outside of being the unwilling recipient of surprise buttsex, you manage to cope without making a show of yersen.
So we’re allowed to kill your people if they pickpocket us to steal our money? Good to know.
