Why Brooke Shields, that was spoken like a first class smartass!

And my reason for making up such a story would be, what, exactly?

That ain’t how things work around here. You made an assertion. Now, either back it up with a cite, or retract it.

And you know, if this were something important, I’d be more than happy to dig up a cite, but this is simply some pissant matter about a celebrity.

I’d like to see a cite for that, too.

I couldn’t find a word about it online. Whether Cruise’s suit-happy ways or the fact that this was on TV in the pre-Internet days is a factor, I don’t know. Not to say we shouldn’t try to be right, but if CS place turns into GD with cite requests I think it’ll get less fun quickly.

Then dig for it. Googling “tom cruise”+ “domestic violence”+“mimi rogers” yields a total of 360 hits almost all of which appear to be porn related. Variations of that yield upwards of 35,000 results. The bulk of those results seem to be related to Cruise’s couch dance on Oprah. As has been noted in the past, finding news items pre-internet days is difficult to say the least. And it changes nothing if one were to turn up. It’s not going to get anyone to stop watching his movies, or converting to Scientology, or solve world hunger or any of that. Hell, if I were to find Tom Cruise’s or Mimi Roger’s blog where it was being discussed, you can bet some wag here would find reasons to scream, “Fraud!”

I just searched Factiva and Proquest, which have articles from newspapers that go way back, and they all go from “Tom divorces Mimi” to “Tom marries Nicole”, without any mention of violence. But I have a feeling ET isn’t on the database (big surprise ;)) so I haven’t checked that.

I had no bias, but I had the resources, so I looked.

Of course, that means nothing, since none of the rest of us can see your search results. However, I believe you, since I can’t imagine any possible reason for you to lie about the matter.

Still, I thought it was pretty damn funny. A similar Jay Leno joke about Demi Moore winning an Emmy for “Best Children’s Entertainer” amused me, also.
And Tuckerfan is talking out of his Tuckerass, but won’t admit it. And Mimi Rogers is still pretty hot, though the California sun has been unkind to her skin.

And did you not see what I posted above?

I agree with Tuckerfan, it is getting to the point were you can’t hold a discussion and give a reference from memory without and attack of some kind. I feel some expect one to prepare a Post-Graduate Thesis research paper on a subject before entering into a civil discussion.
I read many articles from various magazines, TV documentaries, web sites and general discussions and I too am not going to limit my every word to the possiblity of an off-hand request demanding I launch into an extensive research project. Since I tend to draw on credible sources and not grocery store rags, I tend to file them away as credible. Can I recall each and every source of each and every item in memory? No.
In GD, yes. In CS, no.

All I got was a blank page, though the URL was right and all. Is it just my dial-up speed?
Also, SUCH a great comeback from Brooke, quite impressive. And I agree that she meant the child ticket for Tom because of his immature & ignorant behavior. It irks my very last nerve when I hear a man say something condescending about women’s health. (But then, I’ve had terrible experiences w/ male ob/gyns, so that’s probably just me.)

Well, now, wait a sec. This isn’t a case of “I seem to recall reading something about feline symbols in Babylonian Astrology” or “I seem to recall Dennis Farina doing a guest shot on Laugh-In.” These are debatable facts without any particular emotional weight. Tuckerfan, though, seems to recall hearing that Tom Cruise committed a felony, which is moving into potential libel.

Worse, his response isn’t just a shrug and a claim of a faulty memory preventing him from giving details, but the implication that Walloon was immature for asking for those details.

What I haven’t seen, bub, is a link. If you have no evidence, just admit it. I don’t personally care what you accuse Cruise of doing (that’s between you and his lawyers), or how Cruise has treated his wives (that’s between him and their lawyers), but if you find yourself shocked at a request for supporting evidence of a claim, you’re on the wrong board.

I will take this opportunity, in referring back to the title of this thread, * ‘Why Brooke Shields, that was spoken like a first class smartass!*’, to point out that Brooke Shields is a shining example of a good looking, well educated, smart-ass woman from New Jersey.

Never underestimate us.

I never underestimate youse Jersey Girls.

Except at the time Cruise would have committed it, it wouldn’t have been a felony. Domestic abuse didn’t get elevated until after the Brown/Goldman murders (and let’s not forget that OJ was found “not guilty” even though 99% of the population would bet money that he did it). Cruise and Mimi got divorced well before that.

I never said Walloon was immature. I stated that this was a pennyanny issue an not worth wasting time on researching. Big difference. If you’re going to claim the moral high ground, you’d better have your facts straight.

Apparently you missed my response to Burnt Sugar. He/she stated that they’d done a search of a couple of news related data bases (but of course, provided no evidence that he/she had), I didn’t question or challenge that comment, by demanding a cite, I’m certain that he/she did the search and came up with nothing. Again, it doesn’t matter if my memory’s right or not, or if Burnt Sugar’s making it up (which I doubt). This isn’t a case of someone misunderstanding a historical fact about an event of significant imporatance, or someone giving dangerous advice about a medical matter, this is a discussion about some freakin’ celeb who’s going to be forgotten in less than 100 years. Big difference. Hell, the report could have aired and then been retracted, or it might have been about some other celebrity, or it could have been a ploy by Ms. Rogers lawyers during the divorce that got quickly dropped because it wasn’t true. It doesn’t change a thing in the grand scheme of things. And if a person has to be expected to provide a cite for every comment made on this board, then we’re all in a lot of trouble.

All I can find is “old nasty rumors” references. No direct quotes.

Cite for that? In all fifty states?

Even if it was only a misdimeanor, it’s still a really nasty thing to say without proof, Tuckerfan. Even if Cruise is a lousy, stupid clam.

And ka-BOOM! goes my irony meter.

Brooke Shields can apparently hold her ground on this issue, and others, with grace and humor. Hats off to her. She’s also better looking now then when she was younger, which is a great thing to say about a woman. She has matured beautifully, and I hope she continues to speak out about PPD. She has the potential for being a strong spokesperson for millions of women who think they are crazy or doing something wrong.

I love her in those Ford commercials. Makes me want to get a big ol’ truck and drive down to the feed store!
