Why can't I do that?

In today’s episode the parts of Chris, Stephen and Jock (a.k.a. The Boys) will be played by Yoda, Anakin and Obe-Wan.

The wife and I took the boys to see Star Wars: AOTC. Put us down for really enjoying the film. It’s not going to win any Oscars, at least not for writing or acting or directing, but it’s a fun way to waste a couple of hours. But I didn’t open this to give you a movie review. I opened this thread to say one thing. I want to be a kid again.

As soon as the movie ended and we were leaving the theater, imaginary lightsabers were at the ready. As they hacked and dismembered there way though the crowds, accompanied by sound effects, and bemused moviegoers, it looked really fun. I really wanted to join in, until the thought of a 220lb, 6ft black man waving his arms and making buzzing sounds just might bring the wrong sort of attention hit me.

We then went on to Fuddruckers where the fun continued. Jock/Anakin was attempting to Jedi mind trick the counter person into giving him a chocolate shake instead of a coke. I wished I could do that one too. “Monopoly money will be fine”, I’d say while waving my hand in his face. “Yeah right!” I imagined his response to be while summoning a manager.

It even continued through bedtime. On hearing loud thumps, an investigation revealed little Jedi, jumping from aircars (upper bunk) to other imaginary aircars (lower bunk). I must admit, at 220lbs this doesn’t look so much like fun, than suicidal. While I was checking on the younger two, the oldest snuck up behind me and lopped off my head. Admit it, wouldn’t you love to pull that on your boss after he asked you for something impossible, and without the subsequent trip to Human Resources? Buzz; oops guess we need a new boss.

I want to be able to get away with acting out.

You, my friend, need to get involved in Live-Action Roleplaying games. We not only do such things, we do them in large groups, in costume, and with props and special effects (at least sometimes). Your kids can play, too, which makes it even better.

The IFGS has a chapter in southern California, but L.A. may be too far south for you. There’s provisional chapter in northern California, but I don’t have an address for them.

There’s also a chapter of NERO in the Bay Area–check out NERO West–Outlands.

There’s almost certainly a Vampire: The Masquerade group in the Bay Area as well, but I don’t have any links for them. The World of Darkness crowd is more into costuming and less into running around with swords than my crew.
