Why can't I insert a hyperlink into a SD reply?

I was always able to do this until recently. The problem may have arisen with a new version of internet explorer. Any ideas?

Quick guess… are you perhaps using the “Quick Reply” box at the bottom of the thread? If so, just hit the “Go Advanced” button to bring you to the full-featured editor with links and such.

Can you be more specific? What happens when you insert something like http://www.straightdope.com or this or [ url ]http://www.straightdope.com[ /url ] (except without the spaces inside the brackets) into a reply?

If you simply paste a web address into the reply box, the hamsters will convert it into a link for you as long as you’ve got “Automatically parse links in text” checked.

For example: www.cnn.com was made into a link after I typed www . cnn . com and hit submit reply.

I’ll bet you are getting a security nag at the top of the window that says,

“This website is using a scripted window to ask you for information. If you trust this website, click here to allow scripted windows.”

This is new with IE7. To avoid it, add http://boards.straightdope.com to your Trusted Websites list in Internet Options/Security/Trusted Sites/Sites

Unfortunately, this causes some odd changes if you are using tabbed browsing. Every time you click on a link, it will open a new window, not a new tab. I haven’t found a way to disable the security nag without causing this problem.

No, I’m in Advanced.

Just testing

www.cnn.com

OK, it works to type it in.
I added http://boards.straightdope.com to my trusted websites but it would not accept this address. It wanted https:// with the “s” after the http. I did that but it did not make a difference, still no hyperlink option.
When I try to add a hyperlink it simple gives an audio prompt. There is no change to the screen.

Solkoe: Adding the “s” to make https://boards… won’t help. Instead of adding the “s”, there is a checkbox on that input window which says "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone. "

Uncheck that and then add http://boards.straightdope.com without the “s” & you’ll be in business. You can remove the entry with the “s”, it isn’t ever going to do any good.

Or, instead of screwing with all that and the silly “click the icon & fill in the two popups” method of entering URLs, just paste the link directly into your message. Much easier.

Moved to ATMB.
