Why did everyone RUSH to back up Manhattan?

Well, just for the purposes of discussion, and because it’s Sunday afternoon and I have nothing better to do than sit here and browse, I’m going to assume that the OP is asking a serious question, and not just trolling.

The basic question seems to be not, “How come Manny moved all these threads?” (BTW, MadHatter, you would probably have attracted the attention of more serious posters if you had made those links instead of just bolding them–not everyone has time to copy and paste those just to see what all the fuss is about. As it is, you’re mostly going to have just the die-hard Pit Rats here in your thread with you, which if you had a genuine beef and were really trying to start a dialogue concerning a moderator, and weren’t just trying to pick a pointless fight, was probably not what you had in mind. And if you wanna criticize Manny for moving your thread, go ahead, but you’ve been here long enough to know that the Pit is the place for all criticism of the SDMB Administration. You shoulda seen it coming.)

But I digress.

The real question seems to be, “How come Manny gets so much support from everybody whenever he’s attacked?” The answer to that is, “Because we all respect the hell out of him.”

If we respected you, and somebody attacked you, we’d rush to your defense, too. As it is…

And I’m blessed if I have any clue as to what exactly your beef is here, besides just generally feeling resentful.

Knock it off, madhatter. You’re WAY out of your league.

Who the fuck cares if their thread is moved from GQ to IMHO?

It’s not like it’s being sent off to another dimension. You can still get that pressing Nacho issue cleared up.

What, you feel like GQ is Ventnor Avenue and you’re being sent to Baltic or Mediterranean? Life’s so unfair!!!

(Groaaaaan…) OH, man. He called **manhattan **“inconsistent.”

I hate to break this to you, MadHatter, but ONE THING manny doesn’t stand being called is “inconsistent.”

You can call him a motherfucker, you can steal his best girl, you can pee in his beer, you can question his taste in neckties, you can sneak his Oreos and twist them open before he gets a chance to, and manny forgives and forgets, wearing a tender, sweet little smile. But for god’s sake, don’t call the guy “inconsistent.”

Alphagene called him “inconsistent” at one of the New York SDMB meetings, and manny threw him the length of 53rd Street between Seventh and Sixth. And Alphagene’s no featherweight.

Actually, if you didn’t uncheck “Automatically parse URLs” those would have been links anyway. Even if vBulletin seems to have some bugs in their URL parsing that I’ve carped about a few times …

It does seem worthwile for these things to be moderated, and I’ve generally got no complaints with the way manhattan does it. I lurked on these boards a good while before joining and posting. Actually, I sent a comment on a column via email from the SD home page, and had an email dialog (with Zotti, or at least with Zotti’s account) that went like:

“you would stand a better chance of being heard if you posted to the message boards”

“well, I don’t really like public message boards that require registration for posting”

“we find it really cuts down on the bozos”

I have to admit he’s right. Eventually, I couldn’t stand keeping my mouth shut and registered. Having moderators scrubbing these things helps, too. I hang out in GQ because it reminds me of AFU (alt.folklore.urban) on USENET, before it got too unwieldy, and USENET got too infested with spammers, recriminations against the spammers (which only contributes to the clutter), and things like the “meow” morons to be entertaining.

Having a moderator like manny doing the “weeding” helps a lot. I haven’t seen any real egregious abuse of power yet - any of us will find some judgement calls on his part that we won’t agree with, but unless they ARE really egregious, I’ll let it pass, since I don’t want his job.

An AFU “old hat” at one point … maybe. I don’t know that I really turned up enough to qualify.

That’s it! Why don’t you take a few months off and prove Manny shot JFK. Drop us a card.

Lets see there are 10797 threads in GQ and you point out 6 threads where Manny possibly was inconsistent . Not a bad batting average IMO .

You then show your incredible knowledge of the SDMB by cross posting your OP from here and starting this thread in the wrong forum .

You may have a point with the links(?) you provided but I really couldn’t be arsed sorting out your fuck ups to be able to see if you do .

You do have the right to complain but I also have the right to say shut the fuck up you gobshite . The Mods. here do a great job sometimes under bad circumstances. People posted their support for Manny because of the shit he had to deal with from a fucking asshole called jally.

I would say that the majority of people who post here are very happy with the way the Mods. do their job ( which is unpaid and time consuming ) and I for one am not really interested in minor quibbles about if they occasionally move/don’t move a thread to the right forum .

So please go get some nachos dip them in the strongest chilli paste you can find stick them up you arse and fuck off while your doing it .

Oh, so that’s the best way to prepare nachos. Thanks.

uh, madhatter, seeing as how I am the OP for the “How the hell do you eat a mango?” thread, I feel as if I should weigh in on this thread. Now, I apologize if the name of the thread was a bit ambiguous. True true, it can be interpreted in different ways (“How the hell do YOU eat a mango” or “How the hell does one eat a mango”).

Be that as it may, if you had taken the time to read the OP and many of the responses intelligently, you would have seen that I meant the latter. And manny manny people (including Manny himself) also saw that I meant the latter. Simply because people also saw fit to give recipes, or that in fact there are many and varied ways to eat a mango, does not change the intent of the OP. and that intent was definitely germane to GQ.

as for jumping to manhatten’s defense, well I think he does a hell of a job. General Questions is an informative, fun, and generally “wacky” place to hang, and is my favorite board of all. Is this because Manny is the mod? No, it’s because of the posters and the discussions. But Manhatten keeps things semi-orderly and protects the board from unsavory characters and stupid mistakes. So for that I thank him, and back him up when somebody jumps down his throat unneccesarily.

Note that I didn’t say ‘mistakenly’. Has he been inconsistent? Without looking at any evidence, I would hazard a “yes”. He is neither a robot nor a god, so he’s bound to fuck up every once in a while. But his mistakes pale in comparison to yours, that of reaming the guy in a thread specifically started to thank him.

you may be right, but is it worth being known as a big ugly cloaca?

and since we are in the pit, you are a daisyfucker. so there.

just chill out, mang. you don’t have to apologize or start a manny-rimming thread. just chill out and this too shall pass.

I thought this a possibilty. You see, it all happened one night, not too long ago. I was enjoying a delicious drink made from the finest California grapes.[sub]praise manny[/sub] Then suddenly, it became clear to me that the moderators of the SDMB were sending electromagnetic pulses through my computer. They were forcing me[sub]hail Alpha[/sub] to continously post here, against my will!! They were forcing me to post kudos[sub]bow to UncleBeer[/sub] to them left and right! I’m still not sure, but I have strong beliefs that there are subliminal messages all over[sub]Tuba is a goddess[/sub] the board, possibly, IN THIS VERY THREAD!

Save yourself!

Oh yea, I peel mangoes and then eat them to the pit. Damn those mango strings. They get stuck in my teeth.

Why did everyone RUSH to back up Manhattan?
I’ve seen Manhattan’s work both as a mod and a contributor. I’m impressed.
I’ve seen your work. I’m not impressed.
It’s a judgement call.

You may want to do a little thinking. Hmmm, why did everyone rush to back up Manhattan? Could it be that all these people may have a point? Could it possibly be that he’s right and I’m wrong?

Perhaps a little soul-searching is in order.

Well, I sometimes think manny is a bit quick to move a thread, and I do not always agree with him, but his board is the most objective of the boards, and he is alone in his efforts to police it. So, altho sometimes I beleive manny was wrong in moving a thread, his % is high enuf so I would say he is doing a very good job. For every thread that I think that perhaps might not need to be moved, there are 20 that do.

I can see the difference easily enough. The first thread was spam and the second was advertising. Why? Because the first had nothing to do with teh straight dope and most likely was being posted at every message board the guy could find. The second was providing funds to keep this site running.

Perhaps Manny should have posted it in another forum, but I see no great deviation from the posted forum rules. In fact, it’s highly understandable that the moderatorswould wish to point out the banner as a way of reminding folk that this place free.

As for this:

A question was asked and the potential was there that it could be answered. Whether people post opinions or not, it’s still a question.

Here’s my IMHO, you’re nit-picking the tiny “mis-steps” of guy who overall is a solid moderator.

I suppose this is true. However, I have noticed that the reasons often include such impeccable logic as

  • critic has a personal vendetta going against the object of critcism
  • critic has failed to understand the situation
  • critic chooses to fail to understand the situation
  • critic likes jumping on badwagons
  • critic has a hair up the butt.

Having perused the complaints against Manny in the ATMB Forum, I have found all of the above sorts of criticism and darned little else. Note, also, that “that much criticism” was directed by a very tiny minority of malcontents rather than a consensus of irritated posters.

So, regarding the question in the title of this thread:

Because we can; because we want to; because fighting ignorance includes fighting the picky, the petty, and the clueless.

Seems simple to me.

You seem to be accusing everyone of being a conformist for agreeing with him. Well, being the resident nonconformist (as anyone here can tell you, I don’t keep quiet about my opinions) I’d like to chime in and say you’re full of shit. And no, I’m not brainwashed, though yours could probably use a good cleaning.

What it comes down to is this: Not everything is as black and white as you seem to think. Judgement calls have to be made. Sometimes, being that he’s human, these judgements are bound to be slightly inconsistent. Secondly, you seem to railing on about the fact that he shared some opinions in these threads. Here’s a clue for ya Sherlock, most everything on this board is an opinion of some kind or another. Now, some are more based in fact than others, but a lot of them fit into a grey area, which is where Manny comes in. He does his best to judge what belongs where. And mostly, we’re pretty happy with his judgements.

Besides, it’s not like he closed or deleted the threads you were talking about. He moved them. Big deal. I doubt even the people who started those threads were as pissed off about it as you seem to be.

Now cease thy crapping before I flamest thine ass.

MadHatter-

I waded through your sloppily presented case and examined the evidence that you offered.

Exhibit A, Survey and Click the Ad, Please: As beaker explained above, the two threads are in no way comparable.

Exhibit B, Mysterious: The OP was asking for specific information–was the pattern observed consistent with any known ritualistic practice? Nobody could answer the question, true, but it was still an appropriate question for GQ.

Exhibit C, Is your post count important to you?: This is an opinion poll, so the thread probably should have been moved to IMHO.

Exhibit D, how the hell do you eat a mango? and What’s the best way to prepare nachos?: jb_farley explains above why the mango thread was appropriate for GQ. The nacho thread was clearly an opinion poll. Therefore they both received appropriate treatment.

So you have shown us one thread that likely should have been moved. This answers your question.

Or, to put it more clearly–Why did everyone RUSH to back up Manhattan? Because he is such a good moderator that even a person hell-bent on criticizing him can’t come up with more than one thread that should probably have been moved.

I know, people say it all the time. But there really is a lot of wine on my keyboard, monitor and desktop now

Brilliant.

MadHatter: quit while you’re ahead. Manny’s probably right: you’re still not over his (utterly correct) judgment call regarding your illegal child porn solicitation. Grow the fuck up.

Congratulations, PsyCat on one of the sneakiest, funniest posts I’ve seen in a month of Sundays.

Shessh, MadHatter, what’s your point? You already answered your own questions. Everyone here but you is a wimpy, conformist moron.

As much fun as it would be to weigh all your contrived nitpicks, somehow it seems to me (programmed dolt that I am) a colossal waste of my time. Not to mention boring as hell.

Since your tantrum is about moved threads on a freakin’ message boardI can’t help but wonder how you classify and cope with REAL problems in life. You’re not only being Ignorant, MadHatter, you’re inadvertantly revealing extremely unflattering things about yourself to the world at large.

Veb

If I may, I’d like to clarify MadHatter unnecessarily long and convoluted OP…

A. GQ is a place for questions and answers.
B. There are a couple of times when people (Spam forbid) post their opinion.
C. Manhattan doesn’t immediately warn these "opinion"ers for improper conduct and delete the thread; indeed, he actually does the unthinkable and posts HIS opinion!

Ergo, Manhattan is a horrible, ignorant, felched-one-time-too-many, hypocritical SOB who must be beaten with a herring this instant! To do anything else would be damnable!

Oh, and anyone who disagrees is a brainwashed conformist. Ha! Not only is my point unassailable now, my feelings of self-worth will be protected from anyone with a brain!

Ugh… after having thought the way 'Hatter does, I think I killed a few million brain cells. Let this be a lesson to you, kiddies… just say “No!” to 'Hatter.

Oh Tom…I love you!
